should we use Youtube chart instead of melon chart to determine biggest song in korea ?

  • It doesn't. How a song charts in Korea for globally successful group is of zero consequence. Examples are Twice and Stray Kids. They do not chart well in Korea, yet are #2 active girl and boy groups globally in terms of revenue, since Korea only contributes a couple of percent of their total revenue.

If YG bypass Korea in their promotions and marketing for BM and produce on of the future top groups, you may see other and even most big kpop companies take the same route.

Oh, Im not disagreeing with that, just more how it relates to the topic of this thread which is "should we use Youtube chart instead of melon chart to determine biggest song in korea" ?

  • A truly popular song will chart similarly on all music charts lol what’s the issue here?

But anyway as long as melon is in like top 2 I’ll only use melon. It gives us unique listeners. YouTube is ignored not because it’s a less popular chart but because it doesn’t give us enough information.

YouTube numbers are just less interesting to look at unless YouTube starts to give us some unique listener metric.

It has nothing to do with how popular the platform is and everything to do with how non standard their metric tracking is.

  • youtube has surpassed Melon and has largest market share in korea. Youtube stream also significant higher than on Melon.

    what do you think ?

Ichart and Circle are compilation charts.

The reason why people used to use Melon was because they at one point Melon used to have like over 50% of market share.

YouTube does not have 50% yet, the barely have a bit more than Melon now.

  • Are they like the Bugs chart?

Bugs has always been weird like that.

  • The reason why people used to use Melon was because they at one point Melon used to have like over 50% of market share.

Melon is still used domestically as the bellwether as well.

To the thread in general -

A song getting #1 on melon has a strong likelihood of getting on social media posts and gets people talking.

A song getting #1 on Youtube may on occasion, but far less people are running to post about #1 on youtube in Korea.

People pushing the YT korea agenda (here, reddit, twitter) are pretty nakedly transparent about why, it's not even hard to guess. It's a useful indicator but it's not a bellwether, as someone pointed up ahead it has a very specific demo, which doesn't translate to the more national demographic coverage melon has.

  • Does SK still not have an industry standard chart that everyone looks at to determine such things?

One streaming service being the end all be all is weird

There are several charts. However, in a nutshell the Korea market is so small that even 10 years ago all Korean charts could be manipulated, although only for a shorter period of time. Now because of usage declines they are cheaper and easier to manipulate and can be done for longer.

Thats why I say Global charts are more accurate, because it is too costly for unethical companies for manipulate for a long time.

  • ichart need to update the points for youtube, they are 4 times less than melon points.

I mean sure I don’t think anyone cares that much about ichart other to get PAK and CAK. People won’t magically start talking about YT charting because as previously mentioned the chart is flawed.

YouTube won’t be any different than melon if it’s tracking wasn’t so flawed.

Global charts won’t tell you what’s popular in Korea though lol. People use global charts to talk about global popularity and they are very popular.

But people explicitly want to talk about Korean charting.

The solution is to Korean chart manipulation is not to use global charts because as we can see global and korean fans tastes are different and people want to know Korean tastes.
