Is the strategy of pre-releasing songs a good marketing tactic, and is having multiple MVs in one comeback a good idea?

  • Pre-releases are not a new thing in K-pop, but they have become increasingly popular since last year, with almost all groups, especially the popular ones, adopting this approach. Personally, I dislike it. Why not just drop all the songs at once, like usual especially if it more than 2 songs? I feel it kills the excitement, and most people don't even care about it, especially if the pre-released songs are not well-received. The most important thing is that it confuses people.

As for multiple music videos, I actually like them. It feels like more songs are being promoted, and some songs may unexpectedly explode in popularity. However, I don't think it's necessary either, as I'm afraid the cost will be taken from the groups' profits later or added to their debt.

  • I dislike pre-releases' strategy for the same reason as stated on the OP. One wrong choice and It kills the mood for the whole era, the chances of It to fumble the bag are high. They have a lead single status, so people usually have expectations.

Personally, I prefer LE SSERAFIM's Eve strategy of promoting a well-loved b-side to single's status after the album is released.

About releasing multiple MVs for b-sides is a great strategy that should be more popular and I confess that is one of the reasons why I have interest in following Stray Kids and NewJeans' careers (and recently loving it for ITZY). I always feel like that they are giving importance for the era as whole instead of one or two songs, a lot of tracks can shine on It's own.

  • Sometimes I feel like it’s a waste if the song is sub-par. I don’t want to think..”Well, it’s JUST the pre-release.” I’d rather be pleased and excited for what is coming next.

  • either way I'm goooooodddd

but I guess it ultimately depends on the songs released and if the songs are "good"...

preleases can be good and drum up hype leading up to the album whereas post album release and promoting a specific (and popular) bside can work as well

Like if I recall MADE from BB had like multiple multiple preleases and it was one of the best kpop albums ever (maybe???)

whereas in current generations a lot of groups are promoting one song from their album followed by another (LSFM's name was mentioned above)

  • If the pre-release is mid, then the group loses momentum and excitement for the comeback.

It has worked so for New Jeans only because their [first] pre-release is the best song each comeback. Other groups have tried to emulate them, but more often than not, the pre-release(s) have been mid for other groups.

imo the better tactic is to release 2 songs at the same time when the album is released. That way if one is not well received, the group has a 2nd chance with the other song.
