I think all KPOP fans should watch this video before talking about achievements again...

  • I think he wrapped it pretty nicely here

  • They don't see kpop idols as a human, they just see it as a statistic, resource and numbers to power their ego.

No one talking about music anymore because "music is subjective". So there will no clear winner if they are arguing. There will be no "X is better than Y" because art is subjective. Quality is subjective. Story is subjective. One man's trash is another treasure. We don't even know if they truly like the music or just facade it to defend their favs so their favs won't be trampled by other kpop stans.

But with achievements and stats, it's a data that they can rely on. A "fact" they said. Objective. Things that can be used to win an argument. 1 million is always bigger than 800k, it will never change. You fav's number is less then that? Suck it up, you are the loser.

That is why achievement could get sound dumber as "the first X group in Y gen in year ZZZZ to achieve C in the M hour". Many achievement lost their true meaning as a way to appreciate things that really achieved by the artist. All of it just turns into a weapon for bragging and to win a dumb arguments.

But I won't condemn those who find a happiness in crunching this statistical numbers. And it's actually important because kpop is also an industry and business. These numbers are important data to see the growth of kpop groups and their overall company.

  • I condemn them because they reduce the idols lives to l nothing but numbers and charts as if they were fuckin stock prices totally belittling the humanity of them their lives are much more than numbers, this bs drives fans unrealistic expectations and pressure they put on idols to be better and better than anything else. To the point you see these people burned out or injured and then working while injured and you wonder why 90% of them have the health of an 80 yr old at 25 and contributes to the mental health issues that ultimately end in suicide. This isn't the only cause but it is one big part of it .

  • I've said it before that there is many different interpretations as to what is a flop/failure

    1. to not chart at all - fairly obvious that if one fails to enter the charts at all then it's a flop

    2. to not chart as well as previous songs - this is fairly understandable that if a group had a PAK for one song but the next song only made it (let's say to the top 20) then one might argue that since the song didn't do as well as previously then it's a flop

    3. to not chart as well compared to their peers - the question who one's peers are is important since charting is by it's very definition about who one is higher or lower than...some people will say if x charted worse than y then x is a flop

    4. to not chart as well as expectations (this is the most subjective) - here a group flops because there is an expectation that certain groups will perform well whether based on prior success or company reputation...this generally applies to the larger or more popular groups - ie. if IU failed to chart (maybe) in the top 5 then one might argue that because of IU's prior successes then her level of expectations is much higher than a lesser known artist or group...

for giannis and the clip in question the issue is the notion of "failure" just as my interpretation of what certain people define as flop in kpop terms applies equally to the nba as well

the Bucks won the 2021 championship and therefore there is some expectation that they will do really well and thus getting knocked out of the first round might be seen to some as "failure"

The one who is on blame is the people who use this numbers as a weapons.

Like I said, analyzing the data is not a bad thing itself.

But yeah, kpop shouldn't just be about numbers. The numbers are just for the industry, the company. It's never the idol's main job to sale stuffs, it's their company's job.

  • dumb take by Giannis. Pre-season favorites, finished the season with the best record in the NBA and overall #1 seed in the playoffs getting knocked out by a team that barely made the playoffs...of course the season was a failure. His coach got fired as well because of how much the team failed.

    but it works for kpop.

its stupid to say everyone else is a failure because 5050 lands a big hit.^^

kpop has varying degrees of failures...some groups flop and get it right the next comeback...some groups can't flop since they never had high expectations to begin with...other groups flop and fade into obscurity or disband.
