This is false, they are one of the most popular idols on Weibo. They consistently rank high in the two engagement ranks, most of the time highest ranked among kpop groups and idols (especially JK and Taehyung) . Taehyungs Cbar alone is bigger than most groups main or members Cbars, his Cbar is only beaten by a couple of Exo members Cbars.

At the time, the Chinese government was trying to discourage people from listening to foreign artists and encourage them to engage with Chinese artists, so this statement can be seen as a bit of pandering to the state.

Didn't Taehyung's Chinese fanbase spent millions for the ad on "Burj Khalifa" for his birthday? Yeah!! And only 2nd celebrity whose ad was on "Burj Khalifa". Isn't Taehyung from a group called BTS? Yeah!!

Actually the Chinese government had nothing to do with the scandal from October. On Weibo there is thing called trend buying which is often done by entertainment companies to push an idol or create a fake scandal. Many C-idols have been victim of this, companies try to create a scandal by buying trends and paying accounts like the Chinese equivalent of Popcrush twitter to hurt a competitors reputation and this time BTS was the victim. The Chinese government actually defended BTS when it became too big. Trend buying is such an issue on Weibo that the Chinese government actually banned it for a week.

They tried to smear and ban BTS, but had to back down when Chinese ARMY massively rose up in a way the government hadn't anticipated.
