They're extremely successful IN China. Chinese ARMY don't come to play.

That's also the incident I mean, it started via a Weibo trend and was spread with wrong translation of what he said from a popular Weibo account which ended up being blown up by Chinese kpop fans from other fandoms. The Chinese government actually had nothing to do with that one. If they did BTS would be banned everywhere in China.
Source: I use weibo and can read decent Chinese.
I mean, the Chinese state news (controlled by the government) actually made an official statement about it, so saying they had nothing to do with it is a little disingenuous.

Well its relative isnt it? No foreign act can really compete or is even in the same ballpark as the biggest domestic artists. It's more that the size of population means even small fandoms look huge compared to other countries. Also helps that the chinese bars are super dedicated and organized.
At the time, the Chinese government was trying to discourage people from listening to foreign artists and encourage them to engage with Chinese artists, so this statement can be seen as a bit of pandering to the state.
And then a year later, the Chinese government took on BTS directly and pretty much lost that battle and had to back down because the outcry was so big.
Uh, the ccp doesnt back down on anything, least of all something like that. If they were truly involved people wouldnt even be able to mention BTS online in any positive way.
