[enter-talk] SEEMS LIKE THIS IS THE END OF KWANGYA

  • What's facing Aespa is Reason #1093 why New Jeans is bad for Kpop. The New Jeansification is forcing companies to make an extremely difficult choice - either follow the herd and do a copypasta of New Jeans' concept which is the trendiest right now. Or continue to do what you've always been doing (eg cutesy, girl crush, elegant/quirky, sexy, etc) and risk being labeled as outdated and uncool.

What will the new decisionmakers do to Aespa? Force them to do y2k retread music? Or keep them going down the supercharged sci fi girl crush avenue?

The biggest irony here is that what is happening to Aespa and Kpop is fellow SM labelmates Red Velvet's fault. Bad Boy is literally the foundation of New Jeans' music, everything they've put out is derived from it. :pepe-notes:

so really, what you’re saying is sm was responsible for their own dilemma rn and they have no one to blame but themselves hmm :pepe-smug: very interesting perspective, thanks for the idea :starryeyes-pepe:

  • It wasn’t working anyway. Aespa next level was a hit because it was a catchy song their high budget kwangya concept was never a hit and maybe some of you here liked it but if it’s gone it’s the best thing that can happen to aespa.

Aespa are pretty and talented they don’t deserve that trashy noisy music or cringe kwangya concept.

With EXO past their debut in 2012 it was never a part of their lyrics or forced to be a part of every inch of their song or musical direction. It was just something that was used in concept photos and concert VCR’s and only fans could pick it out. Making a cringe concept become aespa’s whole identity was a terrible idea and someone had to be fired for it.

What Lee Soo Man was doing for SM wasn’t working. It’s just a fact that SM was falling behind.

Also is yoo young jin really gone? ANOTHER HUGE WIN FOR SM ENT. He was good no doubt but he has not been consistent in a long time. There comes a time for everyone to gracefully step aside.

Chris Lee is an another useless guy tho. So I don’t have much faith in him. But change was needed one way or another. And the weak links with old dated ideas leaving isn’t a bad thing and at least the reason for SM’s failure in recent times have been identified correctly.

  • Whats even more bizarre is that many of sm’s idols really like LSM. I know SNSD has gushed many times about how much they like him.

I don’t think this will be the end of any of their groups but we are about to see whether or not this new management team can do well.

There was an internal management change previously (a few years back) and it led to a lot of albums being underproduced and short/abruptly ended promotion cycles. If I recall correctly, the “newer management” was also responsible for declining several major offers for SM idols, many of which were against idols’ wishes (SM declining Seohyun’s offer to be in Train to Busan without her knowledge comes to mind.)

Hopefully this will benefit their idols but I have a bad feeling that it sounds like they’re setting the stage for exploitation (even more than the industry has in general).

  • I actually saw in an article today that YYJ was likely still at the company but there is speculation as to how much clout he will have after this all settles

I should have posted it but it's out there somewhere

I don’t like him but people like him leaving is also not a great sign. I’m at two minds about this. Yeah a lot of things I found shitty at SM is changing but at what cost at least with status quo I could have got that EXO album 🧍‍♀️👩‍🦯

It's a gamble I agree, like sure YYJ held the music back in a lot of ways, but what could replace him could be much worse

  • aespa already tied down to the whole kwangya and AI concept, it is stupid to drop it now because it was their trademark

They can switch up concept between comebacks but i dont see then throwing away the whole kwangya behind. Probably new groups wont be tied to kwangya but the existing groups especially aespa is born from kwangya itself
