Do JPOP artists themselves wants to go global?

  • Many discuss about why Jpop isn't big in the global stage, and one of the reasons I've been seeing is Japan copyrights law is restricting them. A few exceptions like NiziU who has the advantaged of being from JYP, XG, BabyMetal, maybe INI and JO1. But the question is: Do many Jpop artists want global fame? They must have a thought of getting international support seeing how Kpop is doing in Japan.

  • Uni909 I think it depends on the group and company

    Examples

MADKID - They realised how many international fans they have (wich is mainly due to anime-openings) and therefore started to subtitle all their vlogs with English subs. The group also did perform on anime events outside Japan

ACME - During COVID they realised how many foreign fan were watching them streaming on YT so they even hired a woman who translated from Japanese to English during the streams. The member also try to do their best by tweeting in English a lot more now and toured a few times trought the US by now (wich actually sucked for them in 2021 since someone had robbed all their instruments when they were in L.A but they had fans who bought them new instruments and even a new car so they could continue their tour)

BALLISTIK BOYZ from EXILE TRIBE - Besides 1 or 2 members everyone else is very good or even fluently in English. Their member Masahiro is even happy for having foreign fans on that level that he opend up an entire English blog on the company-website. Their company also had send them together with a rookie group from same company called PSYCHIC FEVER to Thailand earlier this year where they performed on several events, even participating on Thai award shows and both groups even got signed to a Thai lable to work with the most famous Thai producer. Thailand was chosen BTW since their company belives that this would be the biggest international market for JPop at the moment.

Hiroomi Tosaka - He is the CEO of a company called CDL Entertainment and scouted a girlgroup in a popular survival show earlier this year. The girlgroup will be co-signed with Hybe Labels for international stuff and his goal is to gain more international fame for JPop with this group.

The Japanese company Avex, but aso a few artists of other companies started to get a lot active on the Chinese website Billibilli, wich is similiar to YT. They hope with that to gain popularity in China. Not many JPop-acts gained a big following on that Chinese website by now but some people who started to get a quit big following seem to be artists as for example Caelan, who participated on the Chinese survival show Chuang2021. It's said that despite that he didn't even made it to the winner group, the following he got in China was so big, that over 4 million people would've watched a clip on Billibilli about his last birthday.

The company LDH has a European, Asian and US branch since a while now and is alo having a trainee group that they selected with just girls that are from Europe to form their first own international girlgroup. The group curently consists out of 3 girls that participated in their home country's version of "The voice". It's not said yet if they are ment to become a international working group, ment to atrackt some foreign fans or just purposly international members to give "new faces" to the Japanese market.

Travis Japan - After they had released a few pre-debut songs and later on apeard on many dance champion ships (and even won some of those) they decided to apear on "America's Got Talent" and later on debuted as the first international working group under their company. Since they only released digital so far and only have 1 single right now it's not quit said yet if their plan is actually working, but some people also were critizising it allready by the fact that they belive it reminds them too much of what BTS is doing and cause the one who produced the MV was apparently the same team who had worked with BTS before.

NIK - They are a JPop group that trought having a bunch Korean member also tried to branch out into the Korean market by performing on several Korean shows with a Korean version of their debut song, but at the moment the group only tends to focus on Japan so it's quit unsure if there might be more going into both countries or if they are just staying with Japan.

ONE OK ROCK - They are curently the most known Japanese rockband outside Japan and signed with Fulled by Ramen, wich is the same company as for example Paramore for their international (mostly American) work. They arn't on a mainstream level popular by the international audience, but if you would ask a lot people about Japanese music, there would be most likly more people who know them than any other Japanese artist.

Bands like for example Coldrain or MAN WITH A MISSION also had toured a few times trought Europe (IDK if they were in America) and from MVs they filmed trought out those tours it seems like a sucess, I think if I'm not mistaken MWAM also once filled a 7K big concert in a east European place, wich is quit a lot for a Japanese artist.

NOA - Since his dream of becoming a KPop-artist had failed and he went back to Japan he decided to try to do the most out of his career as an JPop-singer and even wishes to work international, even tho since his debut he had only been working in Japan and it seems like that there is no plan of him for now to do something outside Japan right now. But he seems to apreciate his international fans by putting English subtitles on most of his videos.

  • I'm very interested in CDL x Hybe group since I like Ruann. I always envision her as a lost member of LOONA, but glad she didn't join them now becasuse of the BBC shait that is ongoing.

  • add to jiminekookie's post,

Takizawa, who took over the presidency of Johnny's ENT after Johnny Kitagawa died, required all talents to learn English as a second language. Some groups even learn Chinese as a third language. In addition to Travis Japan's US adventure, many of their talents started to take part in international film and TV series projects. Snow Man is seriously planning to expand to Asia and is seriously working on the Chinese language for this. There are rumors that they are going to do a big Asian tour for next year. We'll see if Takizawa's resignation will stop these recent developments in the company.

Also, former Johnnys talent Yamashita Tomohisa is slowly making a name for himself internationally. He appeared in the first season of the suspense drama "The Head", now he will appear in the second season of Alice in Borderland. He is also starring in another French/Japanese co-production drama, and will soon be in an American movie where he has a small part.

  • It's probably a mix. There are definitely a lot that do especially younger ones

Also what exactly is "going global" lots of Japanese acts can hold tours all over the world. Does that count or do they have to do well on a pop chart?

  • FYI - some Japanese musicians are already global even if not mainstream. Joe Hisaishi and several JROCK/JPOP are globally recognized.

I think all artists would want their work to reach the largest audience possible but it is their industry’s limitation and laws that prevents it.
