IVE kind of feels like a 2nd gen group

  • IVE really does give me second gen vibes in certain aspects. They are just releasing really catchy and polished songs, no noise music, no specific overarching theme that puts them into a box (e.g. girlcrush, cute etc)

Just catchy and boppy music, great visuals (especially wony and yujin) and pretty music videos.

Does anyone else get that vibe from them? It’s hard to explain

  • I think 4th gen ggs are more like 2nd ggs in general rather than 3rd

It’s hard to explain my thoughts. but I believe there are similarities with IVE that makes them closer to being more like a 2nd gen group as opposed to a third gen group.

For starters, in the third generation, the big three gg’s were so huge, it was a rarity to have a group outside of the big three reaching the heights that IVE have achieved. Other than very few exceptions like Gfriend and Mamamoo, the big three had a sort of monopoly when it came to widespread GG success. There is more diversity in gg success standards in the 4th gen (just like the 2nd)

In addition to that, a lot of gg’s in the third gen focused more on concepts and the image of the group over actual songs and catchiness, this differs from the second gen where success was more heavily based on the songs.

When I see IVE, I’m reminded of T-ara or After School or 4minute or Kara - in some ways, with their back to back catchy and upbeat songs. If IVE operated more like a 3rd gen group, I’d expect them to have undergone an image or genre change for their next comeback or reinvent themselves in a way that makes them not so “public friendly” etc.

More risks were taken for 3rd gen gg’s, it was a time of experimentation but also a time where gg’s were more boxed in than before.

I think with the 4th gen, there is more consistency. It’s interesting to see. I always suck at explaining myself, but in some ways I truly do see them more like a 2nd gen group!

  • Twice continuously released the same type of music so much so they were mocked for it at one point. Same with blackpink. Which 3rd gen are we even talking about. 😭 Some groups experimented and others released the same song 3-4 times over. All of this hardly means anything.

As for non big3 it’s too early to say if IVE is going to continue their success or Korea will move on and not care about them next year.

Hmm, you do have a point with TWICE, but TWICE and BP has a very unique signature sound that immediately made me associate that type of music with them. (Blackpink with their heavy beat drops and repetitive lyrical parts, TWICE with their chanting)

Whereas with IVE, I personally relate them more to second gen gg’s in that while they are still unique, their music is more simple and universal. They don’t have this overarching specific theme that connects all their songs together stylistically. I also think their music is easier to consume, they aren’t as polarizing musically which is a theme i’ve found in the 4th gen in general)

  • Many 4th gen groups are trying too hard. IVE doesn't feel like that so I understand your point, I think the best groups are the ones who feel effortless.

I agree, their music isn’t as polarizing as many other gg’s before them. There is a refreshing simplicity about IVE that I’ve come to associate with earlier gg’s. I think the fourth gen is better at this overall, the exception would be JYP 4th gen imo.

  • I think IVE, LE SERRAFIM and STACY didn't need to go through a major growth phase that most groups need in their first year. They simply started out as true professionals. And I honestly don't think that LE SERRAFIM and IVE having former IZ*ONE members really comes in to play. They all started league's a head of their rivals.

  • I wonder if anybody goes in a FX memory land trip to remember the type of music they did and how badly it age or how autotuned and outdated 2ne1 sound. From that, the idea if 2n gen just doing poppy music is funny

Imo what define 2nd was their variety apparence and neither 3rd or 4th gen have that, most just aren't funny to being with like 2n was

IVE have definitely released similar genre of music and concept three times over. It’s different genre from what bp and twice did but there is definitely a common thread in much the same fashion.
