Menus with calorie on them, yay or nay?

  • Its became the law where I live to include calories and other nutritional info in the menus. It is to help people with heath problems such as diabetes or high blood pressure to make an informed choice.

Surprisingly this has helped smaller businesses compare to big franchises since they seem to have alot of healthier options.

However some people find calories on display triggering.

example this viral vid on tiktok, the person abuses the waitress bc the menu has calories

  • I say yes, still there must be an option to not see it. Sometimes I’m not in the mood to look at calories but most of the time I like knowing

Btw, This woman is so entitled yikes imagine having to be around her.

  • im confused how calories are triggering.. just because you can't see the number doesn't mean the calories don't exist? i can see how people that have dealt with restrictive EDs might obsess over the number but even then. you don't have to count calories or even pay attention even if the number is there. truth is a lot of people, especially in the u.s severely overeat and don't even realize it. seeing that the thing you would have guessed was 400 calories is 700 calories is the wake up call some people need.

  • i have never looked at the calories of anything and i can understand why people with eds would be bothered by it

all in all it complicates things a bit more than necessary so i am a nay on this

But it simplifies things for alot of other people who need to watch out suger or cholesterol intake.

  • interesting

I'm not sure about other countries but here in Australia we don't have calories on restaurant menus but all (packaged) foods like sold in supermarkets have that information on them so I guess having that information on menus isn't too far out of the ordinary

  • What's wrong with that woman, she's not only abusing the waitress verbally but also recording her (probably without her not even knowing and without permission) and uploading it to damn Tik Tok. I could not even finish watching the video, it disgusted me deeply.

Personally, I don't think calories are that important, but I understand they can trigger someone with EDs or similar issues. I've seen calories written in the packages since I have memory and I don't care about them, but I look at other nutritional values that are important in my opinion.

  • The calories will still be there even if there's a numerical visualization of them or not....

This makes me wonder if she has issues with food labels on items at the grocery store as well since those have the calorie counts on them too

  • I like knowing what I eat. Mind you I also always inevitably want to eat the item on the menu with the most calories, it's like whenever I think oh that sounds good, I'll check and yep, the most calories. Every time lol.

sometimes I eat it anyway, sometimes I go for a less heavy option. But it's helpful to know IMO. Sometimes a salad can have way more calories than a pasta dish and people don't even realise they are overeating.
