EXO

The range of EXO's discography is breathtaking, and has been covered well already in this thread. This is a group that offer rock opera lite like "El Dorado" to full-blown R&B power ballad like "What is Love" to dark and sexy like "Obsession" without blinking an eye. I personally think their sweet spot is R&B or pop with a heavy R&B lean but the group continues to show a wide range of styles to suit almost anyone's tastes, if you like great music and amazing voices.

Tempo

R&B is the sweet spot to me for EXO - this is like a greatest hits of EXO's strengths in one song: a cappella vocal flex like the best r&b groups (think Boyz II Men or even doo-wop), 4 to the floor bop, fast and slow vocal flair, impressive ad libs.

Artificial Love

When asked what song I'd show someone who didn't know EXO, I said this one. Why? Because it shows the group isn't just ol skool New Jack Swing r&b or warm love songs, but can offer the kind of sleek and propulsive EDM that gets everyone dancing and is popular on the charts. And it still finds time to showcase those dynamic vocals...because EXO.

MAMA

Like El Dorado, this reflects the bombastic rock opera portion of the discography. It's dramatic, it's extra, but again, so very different from a Tempo or Artificial Love. For me, personally, songs like this and Wolf didn't interest me in EXO originally. (Overdose was the one that got me into them...) Over time, it's still not certainly in my favorites, but like, El Dorado, I respect it technically - and it certainly serves its point here to show the range.

Lights Out

I've highlighted a lot of flashy songs, but they can also dial it back for the kind of mellow, coffee house vibe for an adult-contemporary feel with vocal flair.

Bonus Songs since I mentioned it

I tried to stick to the topic here, but since I did extras on all the others, it only made sense to throw one in here.

I picked Tempo to represent R&B EXO - and it is an amazing song that tells the story, but I'd just add two more to highlight what I think is very much their sweet spot to my ears.

Overdose

Modern R&B. This is the song that got me into EXO and it still slaps.

Call Me Baby

This song was actually my most listened to song last year on Spotify - all these years later, I still love it so much. It's pure New Jack Swing style R&B in the late 90s style - not surprising since it was written and produced by New Jack Swing legend R Kelly. If you don't love DO's "baby girl" at 1:27, I got nothing for you, yo.

The way artificial love is def a big stand out!

And tbh tempo def deserves a mention. I opted to combining their rnb sound and their flawless ballads in one category so i can focus on diff sides lol

I know you're an el dorado anti smh but yesss mama is def another epic soudning song from them. Their debut was just that powerful!

I actually had cmb in my initial list because its still that exo song and literally pop perfection! But ditched it to promote their trashy bops because like the swaggy hiphop sound, trashy hype bops are also smth not associated with exo when they can easily excel at them as well~
