why is the gap between BGs and GGs debuts so huge?

  • according to this list 59 groups debuted in 2021

17 boy groups vs 39 girls groups + 3 mixed

and according to the 2022 list out of 29 debuted groups

19 of them were gg and only 10 bg

it was even bigger gap on 2015 for example, when 44 ggs vs 16 bgs debuted

now idk how accurate this is, i got the link from reddit.. but anyway. tha gap is kinda huge?

why do u think this is?

it can't be because ggs are more profitable right?

when u looks at big or midtier companies they all have about the same number of bg and ggs

and if ggs were more profitable they wouldnt debut bgs at all?

is it bc more girls are interested in becoming idols? or it easier for small companies to manage ggs? or ggs resonate with public more?

    or is this list bs?

  • Maybe cuz girl groups do better in Korea. All kpop agencies are Korean based after all and seeing all new popular girl groups probably makes them think it's a better bet to debut a girl group than a boy group.

at first i though it's just a recent trend but checking previous years looks like its always been the case

and gg do better with public in Korea but bgs have more loyal fandom? do u think ggs make more money after all?

  • I think a lot of companies put their female talent into girl groups so they can try to get them noticed by people before trying to set them up as an actress or model. You do a lot more press as an idol so they have the potential to get their photos out for buzz.

Like I really don't think some of these companies care if their ggs actually do music more than like once or twice a year cause they can try and push them in other fields. :wellr:

  • Yes girl groups are more profitable atm

They have potential to chart well and now can sell well and gain decent fanbase

None new boy groups are hitting with the public, maybe when that miracle bg comes and gives company’s hope again they’ll debut more bgs

but the gap between new bgs and ggs was always huge

    its not just recent years

and the most popular group of all is still a boy group so wouldnt companies debut more bgs now?
bgs dont chart but they still sell more and their fanbase is not that fickle

  • These last years the industry has been begging for more ggs. Not only are they getting more profitable than before because of fandom engagement, but I feel like for smaller companies it's more probable to hit big somehow with a gg than with a bg. The bg market is very, very hard to get into and the concepts are a lot more monotone. Also because the general interest for bgs have dropped in SK, getting to perform on festivals and such for nugu boygroups is harder; put a nugu gg anywhere with a catchy song and they'll get attention from boys and girls from different ages. Put a nugu bg anywhere and they'll only get attention from some teen and young girls. The prejudices play a big part too.

but this can be applied to bgs too, no?

  • From an investment standpoint you want something that will give the most reward for your risk and that's exactly GGs. They have great initial success but lack longevity however there is no shortage of trainees so the company will simply debut another one and keep the cycle going. BGs in the end win because of longevity and loyal fans so the groups can survive off touring and album sales alone but it takes years and millions to get there which is something many small companies don't have. There's also space for 10-15 GGs to coexist, be somewhat relevant and be profitable. BGs space is a lot smaller if you're not in the top people probably don't know you or don't care.

Girl groups were more popular domestically during 2nd and 3rd gen too. The gap wasn't as extreme but girl groups always have more gp support. Their popularity is more visible

I also think you're on to something with there being more girls who want to be idols. It's considered kinda embarrassing to be a fan of boy groups as a guy so I'd imagine you'd get a similar reaction if you said you wanted to debut in one.

  • isnt that bad tho? why would company prefer a group with shorter life span?

It’s easier for new GGs to attract listeners (as we seen from recent debut of GGs) compared to BGs. So they are able to capitalised their group more quickly than BGs. But the attention span of listeners to the same GG is not as long. After 7 years, companies prefer to debut new GGs. As we’ve seen from Gfriend, CLC, etc. More GGs disband too compared to BGs.

  • Girlgroups aren't as profitable as boygrous yet, even though they are much closer than what they used to be

During third gen Boygroups were far more profitable than girlgroups and as you showed companies already debuted more girlgroups

So, why companies debut more Girlgroups?

The reason is pretty simple: There are more female trainees compared to male trainees

Overall the big companies as rule for thumb debut more male idols than female idols, or at least debut them in a similar number. If there are much more women interested in being idols, where those trainees goes?

To small companies mostly. It comes to no surprise the absolute majority of GG your listed are from small companies

Remember: For small companies, their business aren't the idols, but the trainees. They have no hope for them to hit whatsoever, otherwise they would debut a Boygroup who needs less investment and farm fandom much more easily if your company don't have hype or previous fame. No, the truth is for small companies their TRUE business is training idols. They survive from training and from trainees debts, they barely make profit from music and for debuted groups if at all. For them is good Big4 do not debut those female trainees because now they could get them and use their dreams as source of money.

    Hope it clarified

  • there's this weird stigma against ggs...like kpop stans self reject ggs after their 4th-5th yr and start looking for new ones, they are ready to ditch the older ones to look for new ones

Company stans are also quick to switch to younger ggs and i guess companies try to capitalize on this

  • It is because women buy more albums and tend to be more loyal to their faves.

Male fans are hardly as dedicated to their faves as female fans. Male fans drift away to another act more easily.

  • I think it has to be the trainee thing that people are talking about. More female trainees ready to debut.

Though, maybe this could be a factor? gg are more respected and the gp is more willing to give them a chance. Perhaps for newer companies, they think gg's could be more beneficial to start with to help establish themselves better and get their name more out there as opposed to bg.

  • Because the gg market is easier to access and easier to get popular, how many bgs do you see getting a Brave Girls and Momoland and grab a hit out of nowhere even with a shitty company..

There are about 6 high profile bgs in 4th gen which are really popular, there are more high profile ggs which debuted in past year without counting 2018-2020.

Likely with the fanbase ggs got this past years it makes even more likely for small companies to start with a gg if on point of general public, they can get good fanbase too.
