Why are acts with multi million unique listeners on Spotify unable to convert even a fraction of that into album sales?

  • maybe the problem is that things like spotify etc exist in first place?

in the past when I was kid you could only see MV in tv channel or hear song in the radio and you didn't have any option to 'just play' it right now

you needed to go to shop and buy a casette or cd and then you could listen to it all the time

I remember even how fun was to use walkman when you bought some new music and went for a walk using those big ass headphones haha

Yes but having fans who will buy your cd’s even if they don’t own a CD player… now that’s something to covet.

  • tbh i think it depends on where the ULs are coming from too specifically when it comes to buying the albums as a fan

if those ULs are coming from us, japan and all those countries where buying albums is easier because of local distribution, u get an advantage

measuring the fan conversion using buying albums as a parameter might not be right

  • Because album sales aren't the most relevant form of music consumption anymore. They're more of a merch thing now and a lot of fans figure there are better ways of supporting these artists than buying an album you most likely have no way to listen to. And since they're closer to merch now they also have to compete with other merch products.

Plus streaming is loads cheaper so fans who are less fortunate can still legally consume their artists music and support them even when they can't easily afford albums. In short streaming is more accessible worldwide so you typically have more listeners on those platforms than album sales.

Yes I know only dedicated fans who want to support their favs will buy the CDs and garnering that fandom seems much harder than a causal steam.

I agree it's incredibly difficult in this day and age to have such a fanbase. Especially outside kpop. That's why it's very impressive when acts manage to gather a large fanbase willing to support them in such a way.

If nmixx sell over 100k copies of o.o the most impressive thing is how the work of the artists or the quality of the music doesn't matter.

If you debute at a big company you get Fandom and album sales for free.

NMIXX's blind sales were less about Big 3 privilege and more about recognition of JYP's brand with girl groups. People who think the company have a good track record aren't going to blink at paying $20 for something like that. It's no different than people who love eating at Popeyes or Burger King being willing to try a new menu option or even people rushing to preorder Elden Ring based on the studio's previous work.

Wait. I don’t follow JYPE that much, people DIDNT get to hear nmixx first, it was a “surprise”?

  • On spotify there are factors like playlists that influence the number of listeners, it's not only the fans that listen. For example I know that JYP bought 50M playlisting for Twice, SKZ and NMIXX so there are a lot of playlists where we find the songs of the groups that are listened to even by non-fans. This is of course the case for all groups and the quantities vary according to the financial means of the company.

I agree that it is difficult to build a solid fandom that's why the BIG4 groups are really advantaged they start with a huge fandom many are actually fans of 1 or 2 bands and the others are more bands that we listen to occasionally without really being a fan but I guess that's normal it takes a lot of time to be invested in a fandom.

About 6 months or so before they debuted they sold a special edition "blind box" before they revealed anything about he group. Most people dragged it as "big 3 privledge!" but it was only $20 and I saw it as a cute novelty where if you ended up liking the group you got something cool that people who came at debut wouldn't have and if you didn't like them then you could resell it to fans. Anyone who has built a solid and trusted brand image could do it regardless of how big the company is.

Yeah why not. It’s a fun idea

JYP didn't buy 50M playlisting for Stray Kids. When they peaked their playlisting was when they were inside the Top 50 Global that they entered since first day. And this playlist is not bought, the songs are added by Spotify itself when It enters the Top 50 of Spotify Global Chart and It leaves as soon as the song leaves the Top 50.

  • playlisting is also influenced by the songs overall popularity and it's pretty outrageous to claim a company just buys playlisting and thus high streams.

Yes also, but that was just an example on one of the factors and companies buy playlisting like they buy ads on youtube it's just a means of promotion for their group. All the companies do it all over the world. ^^

  • Now I think it's more difficult to become known as an artist, you have to have a large catalog of semi-successful or successful songs. But if you have a large group of fans then you are assured of reproduction, sales and streaming that does not mean that the PG loves the songs of your favorites. For me, the most impressive thing about BH is that it doesn't use those connections for TXT, we don't have playlists on Spotify, ads on YouTube, mediaplay in Korea, but its growth on Spotify, YouTube, melon is the same and on top of that, album sales in Japan, Korea, the United States are balanced. Adding to the fact that they are still on the charts in some countries, I was surprised that they are still on the chart in Germany. In Korea his popularity is balanced between 10, 20 and 30 years old and in China TXT has good reproductions of the 4th gen, in addition YEONJUN is the artist who has the most pre-orders of a C bar of the 4th
