Based on the figures, it looks like IFPI weights album sales differently:
Japanese Albums: ~1.25
Chinese sales: ~0.50This explains Arashi's #1 last year because I was confused as to how in the world did they manage to sell more than 500K+ out of no where. It makes sense since Chinese digitals are cheaper than other countries and Japanese albums are sold for $30-$50.
Japanese digital sales are actually higher than your average digitals in the west as well. BE costs $3 in China [NetEase], $9 in the USA, and $12 in Japan.

Chinese Market made him enough to wear a fking condominium on his wrist
I mean if I can be at that level I don't mind
https://mothership.sg/2021/03/jj-lin-watch/
Not a single Korean act is 1/10th as big as JJ Lin, lol. You can't compare him and how much he earns/make with a K-pop act.
Also, Japan is definitely the biggest market when it comes to sales and touring.

I remember so many AKP users, mostly girl group fans, saying that Spring Day was only fandom carried and how once the 24Hits chart gets implemented, it would free fall because the new chart relies on the GP lot. Spring Day went from charting in the 70s-80s on the daily chart to slowly rising back in the top 50. It is also stable across all digital charts and not just Melon.
Talk about a monstrous hit.

YET and LGO will be their next songs to get gold (50M) in the upcoming months.
Dynamite Holiday Remix, BST, MDR, Let Go, DLM, and maybe Fire + SD + Euphoria + Crystal Snow will get silver (30M) in the future.
BWL and Stay Gold will get platinum (100M) sometime this year and maybe DNA + Lights as well but not until next year.

how much more to surpass gangnam style ?
i saw somewhere it sold 4m not sure if its accurate tho
it is diamond certified so 10M+
Gangnam Style is only certified for 5x platinum [single format] by RIAA. It hasn't been updated since around 2014 though.

I do not know why you thought the OP meant physically if neither Dynamite or Make You Happy have physical releases to help chart on the physical or top single (streams + downloads + physicals) charts. Anyone who follows Japanese charts closely know that Dynamite and MYH were the two biggest idol group hits last year and comparing them to physical releases make no sense. For example, Step and a Step may have more units on the top single chart than MYH, but it is no where as big with the Japanese public as MYH (streams/downloads). Among the top 10 songs you listed from the combined singles chart, only 4-5 can be considered actual big hits while the rest are boosted from just physicals.
Even though Sixtones have 1.78M on the combined singles chart, only ~20K-30K is from non-physicals. Dynamite has 0 physicals but is about to surpass 1M units from just streams and downloads alone.

I'd not say this a year ago but now i think they are. Their full album exceeded everyone's expectations and is now the highest charting K-pop group in US this week on Billboard. Moving forward, all they need is more exposure like they have been getting since 2020 and some award show nominations. Yup, they broke through successfully. What an amazing feat by a korean girl group in the US soil.
Thanks to vinyls being shipped out last week which is why The Album charted [NEW] on the vinyl sales chart this week.
Also, Blackpink is big for a K-pop group but still need to continue to grow to be considered fully big here.

Are we talking about overall or just in Korea? In Korea, BTS have bigger hits overall than the other two groups, they have the most songs nearing 5M+ unique listeners on Melon. They also have hit b-sides like Dionysus, The Truth Untold, Mikrokosmos, Go Go, Euphoria, Make It Right, Mic Drop and Dope both in Korea and internationally.

"@hikakin confirmed it! He liked the recent tweet by Oricon. They bought it to help with the music industry because of COVID. He will release a YouTube video about it soon. He has nearly 10M subscribers and is one of the biggest internet celebrities."
Hikakin has mentioned BTS a lot in the past. I believe he is a fan of their's. Below, Hikakin expresses frustration over not winning a ticket to the BTS handshake event, lol.

2016: BTS/EXO, TWICE
2017: BTS, TWICE
2018: BTS, TWICE
2019: BTS, TWICE / BLACKPINK
2020: BTS, BLACKPINK
2015 - BIGBANG dominated the digital charts that year in Korea with the MADE era. The only thing EXO had them beat that year was physicals but when it came to domestic popularity (Gallup) + digitals, it was definitely BIGBANG.
2016 - EXO was still the best-selling boy group at that time but BTS had bigger hits such as Fire + BST. Although EXO had the most overall physical sales, WINGS was the best-selling album on Gaon with 750K+ sales (1st album to sell 600K+ on Gaon). BST was released in October so it didn't chart high on the year-end digital charts but it has surpassed 2.5M downloads and 100M streams on Gaon. BST is a bigger hit than any song EXO has released except for Growl.
2017 - IDK why people think any other boy group should take this year. SD & DNA were the #1 and #4 biggest idol group hits on the Melon decade chart which proves how massive those two songs are. Plus, BTS were ranked the most popular male idol group on 2017's Gallup chart.

Yeah. Dynamite is the biggest foreign hit in Japan since 2012ish with CMM by Carly Rae Jepsen and WWNGBT by Taylor Swift. It ended at #7 on Oricon year-end for streaming despite 4 months of tracking and top 20 on HOT 100. It has spent 23 straight weeks in the top 7 and will end in the top 5-10 on the year-end HOT 100 JP for this year as well. It is honestly a monstrous hit there at the moment.

A lot of people know EXO was big during their peak and are still the #2 boy group for 3rd generation overall. The OP is just asking top 5 all-time in Korea along with H.O.T, GOD, TVXQ, Bigbang, and BTS. People might think to swap out GOD with EXO but some current K-pop fans don't realize how massive GOD were during their time. If GOD was still able to do well digitally and even win daesangs (MMA) a whole 15 years later after their debut, I think that shows how much public and fandom support they still have.
If we are talking about the top 5 boy groups of all time domestically, then I would agree with the top 5 listed since those were the groups mentioned and voted by Koreans. If we are including international achievements, then I would definitely include EXO & SUJU along with BTS, BIGBANG, and TVXQ.

I can't determine what GP likes after chart reforms. It used to be easy and we could predict which songs will chart well. With the new reforms, I have no freaking clue. Songs we bet on charting well fail miserably and those we least expect end up topping charts. We're even waiting for IU to see if she will make it or fail as well lmao
There is no way IU is going to fail. As seen with her current songs, IU will probably benefit the most from the new chart reform with insane longevity. She might not get her usually 1.3M+ unique listeners anymore as before but she will probably be the only one that could surpass 1M in the future and she will probably get 700K+ with her new song. That may not sound like a lot but it looks like 700K is the new 1M mark on Melon. From the last 7 months of the reform, only Refund Sisters, SSAK3, and Dynamite managed to surpass that mark (700K). The thing about IU is that her usual ULs is way higher than others so I expect her to stay at #1 for weeks and her bsides (1-3) will probably chatt in the top 10 for a few days or weeks since the current ULs are very low.
