    We're in a 4th gen thread.

Also J-pop sells different. J-pop groups do this 1a/1b singles that sell really well. Japan buys alot of singles.

For example. txt singles have sold around 100K each, where JO1, is around 300K and 400K

I follow the Japanese charts and sales really closely. I thought you were saying JO1 was "much bigger than any of the active KPOP groups in Japan" which I thought included TWICE and BTS. I do agree that JO1 is bigger than any of the current 4th gen idol groups. It helps how that they were a part of the Japanese Produce series.

Japan is gonna be dominated by in-house japanese groups.

JYP is making a male NiziU, and with the way Japan loves some JYP, it most likely pop off. Im assuming HYBE/another smaller label will follow, cause SM and YG dont seem to give a shit.

JO1 is pretty big in Japan, much bigger then any of the KPOP groups in japan

How exactly is JO1 bigger than TWICE/BTS in Japan? Both groups have a bigger hit (TT and especially Dynamite), better streams/YT views, and BTS have way better physical sales (BE sold ~400K with 1 $50 version and 1 $30 version with no fan meets) than JO1 ( <200k for first album w. 4 versions).

ITZY's numbers are still very low in Japan but doing pretty well WW. The numbers are too low in general in Japan for any 4G girl groups, though I do agree ITZY is leading. Besides JYPE doesn't need ITZY to do anything at all in Japan with the numbers NiziU pulled in on their first single. NiziU could be a one hit wonder but I'm seeing a lot of hype for there new songs that are coming out in a few days with a physical release.

I'd probably add (G)I-dle and maybe Everglow for WW though as they seem to be doing pretty good in those metrics.

ITZY obliterates everyone out of the water for digitals among any other 4th gen group. They are not huge in Japan or anything but they are def the 3rd best-performing Korean girl group digitally (+ YouTube) there and 4th overall after BTS, TWICE, and BP. No other 3rd / 4th gen girl group does nearly as well as ITZY digitally.

Since the OP is asking who is the biggest in general (overall), then the only answer should be BTS. If we are talking about just in Korea, I can see why people would say IU since she has been popular since her breakthrough in 2010 (digitals). However, I would say based on who has had the biggest impact in their country, then BTS. They're the only artists that was awarded the order of cultural merit by the president and they have won "lifetime achievement" awards and swept all of the daesangs 5 different times at award shows. They also have been voted by the #1 singer by both entertainment figures and the GP (Gallup) for 3 years in a row which no other singer has this past decade.

here it is it. they called them out for omitting some sales.

    https://chartmasters.org/2021/…-bit-of-ifpi-annual-list/

I do agree that IFPI is inconsistent when it comes to the sales because I remember Taylor should have gotten #1 last year but Arashi got it (I concluded that Japanese sales were weighted by 1.25 because of how much more expensive full albums are there compared to anywhere else in the world, and when I did the math, weighing their sales by 1.25 gave me the total IFPI reported). However, I believe what that website didn't bring up is the fact that companies are sending their artists' sales to IFPI and then they decide if they're valid or not. I remember ARMY were upset last year because Persona sold 3.5M on Gaon but IFPI reported 2.3M or something. A journalist from the Korean Herald (?) reported that IFPI's contract with Gaon expired back in late 2018 and they didn't renew which is why BigHit had to send BTS' Hanteo sales instead because they are confirmed sales (they did not send Chinese sales for 2019 but they did with 2020). So I believe Chinese companies have to send their data to IFPI but then again, nothing is confirmed if that is the case.

I only wish IFPI was more transparent with these annual reports and how they're calculated because they are seriously so inconsistent. What I was most annoyed is the fact they released a new album total consumption chart but failed to report any of the SPS units or even released their methodology on how they based their rankings.

IFPI did not count 1,6 m c- sales for bp and the same amount for taylor while they counted them for justin beieber

so basically the 1,5 is without c-sales as well except for the physicals.

Wait, why do you think they did not count Chinese digital sales for BP? These Korean companies send Hanteo data because they're confirmed sales while Gaon doesn't distinguish between confirmed sales and unsold shipments / sales. If we add The Album's Hanteo sales ( < 800K) with its Chinese sales (< 700K weighted out of < 1.4M sales), it equals to ~1.5M.

The math also works for BTS' albums (Hanteo sales + Japanese digital sales + Chinese sales).

i would like to remind people that "the album sold 1,4m " and only 500k are from china

that's all i have to say

u guys can get just comment for the free akorns

How many physicals did C-Blinks purchase? By looking at the album sales on IFPI, they did count Hanteo sales and Chinese sales but they weighted them. I believe by 0.5. The sales for singles are weighted differently (~0.25 based on Xiao's units).

If 'The Album' sold ~1M digital sales on Chinese digital sites, then that is approximately ~500K units already included.

~500K units from Chinese digital sales + whatever they bought physically = their total Chinese sales / 1.5M total on IFPI.

Dynamite is a fighter. IU is appearing on YQOTB on Wednesday so we could see an increase of ULs for her.

After BTS playing that game with SD on YQOTB, it rose ~20 spots (including IU's album bomb; would have been ~#23 without IU's album bomb). The fact that Jaesuk sang along to Spring Day and said how he loves the song + Seho admitting it being his favorite song shows that SD is really a GP favorite.

I adore BTS for speaking up at times like this.

I love how BTS have shown their stance about the Sewol Ferry Tragedy, BLM, Asian Hate, sajaegi on digital charts, etc...

It was #47 12 hours ago. It is going to go back down soon though because of IU and her expected album bomb.

I would add them, it wouldn’t make sense to not add them. Happy Ending is the longest charting single by any Kpop act on oricon (89+ weeks) + Fallin Flower (their Japanese single release from last year) is also one of the longest charting singles on Oricon (50+ weeks). Seventeen, Twice, and Bts were also the only ones to reach #1 on BB Hot 100 Japan last year as well. Plus they were the first boy group in 43 years in Japan to rank #1 on Oricon weekly charts for 3 consecutive years with foreign albums, along with being the first boy group after 12 years, and 8 months to consecutively chart #1 for two weeks on Oricon. They also set a new record for being the first foreign male/ third foreign act to chart #1 on Oricon weekly charts 4 consecutive times. They also had the highest charting single by a Kpop act on BB Japan’s year-end chart. I would consider them doing really well in Japan based on charting.

Seventeen is popular within the Kpop niche but aren't that big with the general public. Their streams + YouTube views + Hot 100 charting + polls show that. BTS and TWICE are way ahead of Seventeen in Japan and Blackpink does better than them digitally as well.

Shape of You is one of the biggest foreign songs in the last decade in Japan so the fact that Dynamite has broken so many of its records for downloads, streaming, and the Billboard Hot 100 is insane! Dynamite currently has ~360K downloads and will probably get the 2x platinum certification in the future (500K) and maybe even the streaming diamond certification (500M streams) since it has 300M streams atm. As of right now, only 6 songs have surpassed 300M streams on Billboard Japan and Dynamite is the fastest, as well as the only foreign song!

This. Plus, seventeen and txt. I think given they solidified japan standings now. If those 3 do concerts there, 1T is guaranteed.

Yeah, but I doubt TXT + Seventeen made ~120B together since Pledis's 2019 revenue was around 80B Won or something which is why I am assuming BTS made the biggest chunk. Like BTS alone probably brought in around the same amount of revenue for BigHit as all of SM acts together in 2020.
