Kpop is and always has been niche outside Korea. It was just the existence of BTS and BP that made it seem otherwise, but both groups have been on hiatus for a couple years so we're feeling the absence. Those groups are anomalies and not representative of kpop's popularity as a whole. If there is a new group with the potential to take kpop to the next level overseas, I haven't seen them.

NJ were not mistreated at Ador. That's why Ador won the injunction.
Real mistreatment (that is sadly common in kpop) is stuff like not being paid, being physically abused, being signed up for deals without your knowledge, slave contracts, assault, verbal harassment, etc. So far, NJ has failed to prove that they were mistreated.
Instead, they've complained about.....their mommy getting fired (even though she was caught attempting to steal their label), a manager from a different label maybe telling a different group to ignore Hanni (even though she isn't sure what she heard, is not fluent in Korean and the girls bowed to her anyway), Ssera debuting first, other groups getting brand deals, and maybe being ignored in an elevator by BSH.
Does any of that sound like legitimate reasons to break an exclusive contract? Obviously not, and the judge said as much in court. Unless they're sitting on a bunch of ground-breaking evidence that no one has seen so far, they're toast.
It's a shame, but NJ should just settle out of court with Ador and move on with their lives.

So, you wanna ignore MILLIONS of people who did the same because of SNSD?
Leave your bubble! Just because YOU and many BLINKS learned about Kpop and wanted to learn Korean language doesn't mean everyone on this planet did the same.
Calling SNSD's impact a "very very small scale" shows your ignorance and lack of knowledge about Kpop.
Does Blackpink have 1 song that is an Anthem for their own country and many others for protesting? No they don't. That's impact! Making you learn the language or watch Kdrama etc is basically just a drop in the ocean.
The thing is, SNSD did have that impact to make people learn Korean and get obsessed with K-dramas. Only it didn't happen in the mainstream West and Latam. It was in the wider Asian continent and Asian diasporas in the West. Which is not any less important, because Asia still has the most kpop fans globally.

Now that this thread has me thinking about SNSD, I want to highlight a few moments that previewed the future of kpop.
The dream of every girl group, to have thousands of female fans singing along to every word:

I asked if you think album sales being inflated thanks to photocards are a good impact when you said fashion deals aren't that good of an impact.
And no, bc bgs now are selling +3M while in SNSD was just tvxq selling 1M and others below and you didn't name drop BB who was never known for their physical sales
But BP does have an album with 2.9M sales... And that's not the point btw. Real bg fandom power was truly showed by BP and Twice imo when those two groups started to also tour like just bgs were doing. And actually overall I could say BP surpassed 98% of bgs with their touring power+digital power+physical power. Buuuut anyway, I already wrote too much, let me play Genshin
It wasn't me who brought up photocards.
The K-pop industry was globally smaller back in 2nd gen than it is now. Mostly thanks to BTS but also the proliferation of social media. That means, back in 2011, selling 100K albums was actually a big deal. Nowadays, anyone can sell that many albums.
DBSK, SuJu, BigBang were at the top of the industry, just like BTS, SVT and SKZ are now. And can BP outsell those groups to have the #1 album of the year? It's unthinkable.
EDIT: Also, I'm glad you brought up Twice, because it's the same with them. Their huge fan base and high albums sales ever since 2016 proves that BP didn't invent girl groups having big fandoms.
-
Do you think photocard is a good impact where album sales are mostly bc of it and we know how fishes are having more albums than kpop fans with the multiple album versions being sold? Was it good for environment? Was it a good impact? Impact is impact imo.
And the fandom wise I said as being the first gg to sell 1M album sales and having +1M attendance tour, this type of fandom power that even in 2016 just bgs had.
Nowadays, album sales are massively inflated. It's more impressive to me that SNSD outsold every other group in the industry in 2011 than BP reaching 1 million sales in 2022. Not that it's not impressive, it just seems way easier to sell lots of albums in today's industry.
Besides, could BP outsell BTS, SVT or SKZ? SNSD could outsell BigBang, SuJu, DBSK, etc.
-
As I said in my previous quote, it was after BP happened that so many things became common in kpop. Fashion deals, sns influencers, fandom as big as bgs, etc etc etc. their impact in America+Europe+Asia is bigger than any other gg.
Anyways, I won't try to change your mind. You just made this thread bc you fought with a lot of blinks yesterday. Have a nice day!
How can BP pioneer having a boy group-level fandom when SNSD already pioneered having a boy group-level fandom? Like I said before, SNSD are the only kpop gg to have the #1 selling album of the year. That means they outsold literally all of their peers. Has BP ever done that?
Also, the stuff about fashion deals and influencer culture sure is an impact, but is it really a positive impact? I don't think kpop is better now that brand deals are common.
-
Let me break it down:
1. SNSD fundamentally changed how girl groups were created and marketed. They pioneered the idea that girl groups could be these glamorous queens looked up to by legions of female fans. Girl groups today are still mostly striving for this paradigm.
2. They were the first girl group to have a fandom and album sales that were on par with boy groups.
3. They greatly expanded k-pop's popularity outside Korea (not so much in the West, but in Japan, China, SEA).
4. They had members who were immensely popular in different lanes in the entertainment industry. Taeyeon is one of the biggest soloists in Korea on her own terms. The entire Korean public knows each member by name.
5. Yoona made the "center" position a big deal in kpop.
6. They pioneered girl groups with a large number of members (Izone, Twice, etc.)
7. The only girl group in kpop ever to have the #1 selling album of the year. This might have changed but I don't think it has?
8. Overall, just being the top entertainers in the whole country as a girl group was unheard of before them.

This is the exact thing that makes me nervous. They sure can still be idols 5 years from now, bt is hard to predict the amount of success they are going to able to garner then. It's of course a long shot and working with what we got now, the odds aren't helping NJZ.
BTS is coming back, which will inflate HYBE's ego even more. And there are gg's debuting left and right, we know how this industry works: always seeking for the next new shiny toy. But crystalblues reminded us of H.O.T and Shinwa cases, which do bring more hope to me than I had before. I do believe NJZ have the same if not a even higher power to get back on track (compared to Shinwa and H.O.T) if the case ends in a year or so.
Aren't H.O.T. and Shinhwa male groups? I wish it weren't the case, but girl groups don't have the same longevity in the public eye.
No offense to the newjeans girlies, but none of the members stand out talent-wise or charisma-wise to the point where it feels like people will still be interested in them years down the line if they stay out of the spotlight.

Didn't YG partially model BP themselves on SNSD? Soshi impact
-
Kpop fans who weren't around for 2nd gen have no idea about the impact of SNSD. They were the first girl group to break out of the girl group box in terms of success. Their sales and fandom were able to compete with boy groups in an era where that was unheard of.
Gee is the most impactful kpop song. It crossed language and cultural barriers and made people in other countries understand the appeal of kpop.
They pioneered the idea of drastically changing their concept from comeback to comeback. They invented the "untouchable glam queens" image that every girl group who appeals to a female audience aspires to today.
Quite simply, you had to be there. SNSD made it possible for girl groups to achieve the highest tier of success in kpop.
At least, that's my opinion. Not arguing that BP is less impactful. Just that 3rd-4th gen kpop stans aren't even aware of what SNSD's impact is, since they normalized so many things we take for granted nowadays.

Blackpink is not a "legacy group" nor is New Jeans. Legacy groups are groups that have been around for over a decade and left a big mark.. Neither is at the active years mark yet... SNSD did not become a "legacy" until 2018. So, everyone needs to stop being so quick to call groups old and "has beens". It is especially frustrating because these convos ONLY happen around female groups.
Also OP this is not a shot at you, I know this is a response to people being ignorant.
I'd say the 3rd gen groups who are still standing with a large fan base (BTS, BP, Twice, SVT) are well on their way to being legacy groups. Not that they're going to lose relevancy, but rather that their impact is mostly set in stone.

Kpop is so boring without them....need a cb yesterday
-
Didn't that already happen when the shaman convos were leaked? MHJ herself hates BTS, armys were always going to hate her (and by extension, newjeans who insist she's the 6th member).
To answer the OP, no they should not. Hybe employees shouldn't have walk on eggshells and work around people who might take them to court for looking at them the wrong way.
-
I completely agree with you on everything you've just said. I would say, however, that IMO MHJ should've complained more so over the styling of Lucky Girl Syndrome, as that is closer in style to NewJeans than Magnetic, which I found to be a stretch. IIRC, she complained about the sound of Magnetic, too, which I feel she shouldn't have waded into and left it to 250 and FRNK to put forward a case against Belift, or the producers behind Magnetic.
The thing is, vaguely copying or riding trends isn't the same as plagiarism. Unless MHJ could prove that Belift violated a specific copyrighted property, she had no case.
Artists in every medium copy all the time, it's not a crime to be inspired by something. If stealing "vibes" were a crime, basically all popular music would end.
Dare I say, she was probably just mad that Magnetic was a hit. The woman seems like a raging narcissist.

I really think the smartest thing for the girls to do is get some completely independent legal advice from a neutral party.
They are using the same law firm as MHJ and I don’t think they’re getting the best advice. If a lawyer really advised them to unilaterally cancel their contract without absolutely solid evidence of serious misconduct, then they have been misled it seems about how this would play out.
The judge in this preliminary injunction wasn’t persuaded by any of their arguments. And unless they have some absolutely slam dunk new evidence, it doesn’t seem like the main trial will go any better.
I think the smartest thing to do is to go back to Ador to avoid having to pay a big penalty. And just make the best of it. Hopefully their parents will wise up and see that sacrificing their careers and future financial wellbeing for MHJ just isn’t worth it.
The thing is, if there is solid evidence of mistreatment, it would most likely be from the time period when MHJ was CEO of Ador. But since the members and MHJ have the same legal team, it would be a conflict of interest to use any of her misconduct as evidence to get out of the contract. Aren't there screenshots of her calling them fat and stupid? Case in point.
The girls are choosing to go down with MHJ's ship, for better or worse. I think it's crazy that it started with MHJ's crimes but now it's newjeans who have become the face of this conflict.
Whether it's their lawyers or parents or MHJ herself, the adults surrounding newjeans are not giving them the best advice.

While we're throwing out random percentages, there is a 100% chance the courts won't allow such a ridiculous penalty fee to actually be enforced. There is no legal precedent for it. In all previous instances of contracts being violated, even when the idols were found at fault, the courts always reduce the fee to something reasonable.
This idiotic hoping for the girls to be in debt forever is just that--idiotic hope from jobless losers who actually fantasize about that doomsday scenario becoming reality. It's hard for me to picture honestly. Hard for me to picture being that much of a loser, I mean. I'm sure it's easy for you; just have to look in the nearest mirror, right?
Even if NJZ lose the main lawsuit, the fee will be determined by the courts, and will be negotiated down. As it always has been in all prior cases.
The only thing running on vibes and copium are your delusional dreams of NJZ being in life long debt. Take your shit take back to whatever landfill you spawned from.
Whatever they end up owing to Ador, it's gonna hurt them pockets real bad
I just hope it's worth it and that the members don't look back in 10 years and kick themselves. Sincerely.
