Also big credit goes to YG. They said, "it's their private life and none of your business."
Always respected YG for doing that.

not enough people to really gauge accurately what the public is listening to. It looks like what the old charts looked like when fangirls were zombie streaming at 3AM. They'd line up their faves' songs on the chart including 5 year old songs. It was a bit of a joke.
Until Korea consolidates into a platform you can't tell what's popular in Korea anymore.
Even Melon is down to 35% marketshare. Users are now spread too thinly across about 7 platforms to really gauge what's popular with the public anymore.
Until a platform can pull 45-50% of the market, music in Korea will continue to be a jumbled mess.
I personally think domestic charts are a lost cause. Too many reforms to combat fan manipulation, and the public still has a hard time navigating through fandom mess to find songs they are actually interested in. Plus all the scandals and lawsuits Melon has.
I do think Spotify will eventually take over though.

Wouldn't take this seriously.
I guess I wouldn't expect too much from a Kpop forum, but YGE is a gigantic company and music is only one part of their business.
Financial experts in Korea, particularly from Hana Investments expects YG's market cap to triple to 3 trillion in 2021 and revenue to quadruple.
Their stated reasons are GD and BIGBANG's return to activity, BLACKPINK's activities and TREASURE's expansion into Japan.
Also YG's subsidiaries are doing very well. And of course YGPlus' continued success and their new contract for music and merch distribution for BH and Pledis. YGKPlus has been doing very well...lots of new models have been signing and announcing new projects. YGStage has announced some pretty big renewals of big actor contracts.
YG and Naver started a new real estate development company, YN Culture & Space.
And YG Investments have been active recently investing in Joint venture with Naver and BH "Venew" and investing in Barago.

they are debuting a new BG soon

I don't know how to feel about yge debuting a new bg so soon after Treasure... even if it's only in China.
I'm worried that the new group might eat into Treasure's Chinese fandom... & reduce their popularity there.
But then again, debuting a separate boy group is better as Chinese members often tend to leave the kpop groups they are part of..., like in EXO.
Hmmm... I still hope they debut this group with a totally different vibe from Treasure.
Hopefully, Chinese Teumes will stay loyal. ( ͡° ͟ʖ ͡°)
I think concepts are important here. It looks like this new group will be older, on average, than TREASURE.
And even though YG's brand is incredibly strong in China, I'd say TREASURE has brought in more fans that arent typically YG fans.
TREASURE is also proving to be the most successful 4th gen boy group in China. They're #1 in followers on QQ. So I don't think there's a worry about eating into TREASURE's fandom.
China is massive. K-idols don't even have to be popular in China to make more money than they can in Korea.
I'd say GD and Lisa's most lucrative endorsements are in China.
So there's quite literally room for everyone there.

TREASURE are already seniors 6 months after debut.

It wouldn't look vastly different. BIGBANG, BLACKPINK, 2NE1, PSY and iKON would all still be top 10.
YG is just good at YT.
If YG released everything off their label YT channel, YG would probably have the most-subscribed YT channel in the world.
It's also smart. Having their own channels gives the artists their own branding and platforms and allows them to grow. It also produces multiple revenue streams.
I've also seen fans complain when artist's MVs and content is released on the label's channels because you get unwanted notifications about other groups and it's difficult to navigate to the content you're looking for.

For as much flack as YG gets for being male-dominated, BH is much worse. Do they even have female trainees?
Anyway, debuting this many in this short time span is a mistake. They'll cannibalize each other. There's not enough BH company stans to support them. They're diluting their own product. And BH has yet to prove they can have more than 1 successful group.

Last estimations I've seen on market share places melon at 32-34%. Ofc none really knows the exact numbers.
Declining? yes, as it has been for the last 5 years or so.
Dead? How? It's still by far the largest music service in Korea, almost twice the share of genie, which is second.
And the loss of market share doesn't necessarily equal loss of subscribers, as the market is growing in total..at least until 2020 and covid that is, for the past year streams and downloads are way down on all the services, not just melon, as is evident when looking at gaon data and its huge drop in digital points.
It's dead. The trajectory says it is. They've lost almost half their marketshare. Genie and FLO have lost users too. The only music platforms growing in Korea are YouTube Music and VIBE.
We're also seeing labels place less importance on domestic charts. All major music labels have hinted at global expansion and creating their own platforms, which is why music shows' days are numbered as well. YG/BH/Naver seem to be building their own platforms...both for performance (the new Venew) and streaming (YG and Naver own VIBE).
This isn't 2012, success is measured differently.
Music labels have all figured out you can make more money internationally than in Korea. They keep targeting Japan, Korea and the US.
With Korea having a population only slightly larger than California and with Melon only having a 30% marketshare...we're talking 5 million users? Maybe 7. It's why no one hits 1 million ULs in the first 24 hours anymore, even though it used to routinely happen...not enough users.
The importance isn't there anymore. Particularly when you have a country next door with 3x the population and market...Japan.
In China you don't even have to be popular to make more money than Korea.

I'm not understanding why this is any way controversial. It's just stating a fact. It is a national hit. The numbers and impact bears this out.
It would be confusing for anyone to contradict that. It flies in the face of facts.
-
cant you get more stupid than that?
and if they do promote at the same time, would it be beneficial for iKon and Seungyoon
YG does it all the time. TREASURE and Bobby just got done promoting.
In 2017 4 YG artist released within 6 weeks of each other...
PSY released on May 10, iKON on May 22, GD on June 7 and BLACKPINK on June 22.
Mino and Jennie promoted at the same time in 2018 and both got music show wins.
It doesn't matter that artists from the same label are promoting at the same time, they're completely irrelevant to one another. Being on the same label has nothing to do with promotions. They each have massive teams that promote each artist.
Seungyoon is well-known in Korea and iKON has daesangs and the best performing idol song ever.
No one is going to overshadow the other.
-
No one's promo is getting cut short. YG has promoted more than one artist at a time several times including this past month.
Seungyoon's solo is highly anticipated in Korea, even though he hasn't released anything in a few years he's a popular solo artist, doubt YG thinks he'll be overshadowed by anyone.
And iKON is about to be on a popular survival show where they're the most well-known group. So they'll have plenty of promo.
I can't wait for both.
-
Soon I imagine to be within the next 5+ years. YG will be part of the unstopable Big Hit machine as will many more I'm sure in the future.
You can talk about it not being Pledis, but in reality all of it's assets are a tiny fraction of the value of BH currently and the liquid cash in the company is enormous. The Suk's own around 22% of the companies shares, 10% is Naver and about another 9-11% is owned by Chinese companies, around 45% of the company is held by smaller holders Big Hit would only need to acquire 18% of those shares to become the majority shareholder in the company. Those shares are worth about 140-150 million at the trading price, obviously they wouldn't sell at that price directly but likely much higher if BH wanted to buy them outright.
But even at triple that value and assuming nothing happens again in the Asian market to tank the shae price like we saw in 2020 that's still reasonably attainable for a company with a valuation currently close to 8bn right now who routinely turn over revenue in the hundreds of millions annually.
Feels like I spend a majority of my time correcting Kpop fans about stuff like this.
No BH could not buy YG for several reasons. But simply put, they couldn't afford it. YG's assets are at half a billion $. With low liabilities at about 5% assets to liabilities.
BH has enormous debt and liabilities at over half a billion $ and 43% assets to liabilities, which is pretty high.
As you can see BH needed YG to invest in this new venture 'Venew'
This is a partnership more than anything.
YGE is an enormous multinational conglomerate with more subsidiaries than BH. BH is trying to expand and diversify its business and trying to be more like YG, which has been doing it for years.
Plus YHS and Naver won't sell their shares in YGE. YGE and Naver have several partnerships intertwined including owning VIBE and their new real estate development company. Plus the Chinese companies that have bought into YGE, YGE also has investments in those Chinese companies including Tencent.
It's not like YGPlus. YGPlus decided to issue new shares as well as YGE decided to sell a portion of its shares in YGPlus. A company can't just decide to come and buy shares.
YHS and Naver won't sell their shares, they're too intertwined in business. Also YG employees owns a great number of shares in YGE.
BH and its subsidiary paid YGE about $35 million for a portion of their shares in YGPlus. But YGE is still by far the biggest investor, owning 36% of YGPlus. BH owns 7% and its subsidiary owns 10%. It's why YG has naming rights.
Also GD and Taeyang have a big portion of shares in YGPlus.
BH needed YGPlus more than YG needed them, as BH stated, YGPlus has deep connections and expertise in distribution especially in China, and BH has issues with distribution because they have no experience in this. But YGPlus is much more than that. They have VIBE, YG Foods, YG investments, YG Sports, YGKPlus (model roster), YG Advertising, Moonshot cosmetics, Nonagon Clothing brand.
Also YGE owns the land that YG/Naver/BH are building the VFX/SFX performance venue.
YGE is too enormous for anyone to come in and buy a number of shares especially BH with their debt, especially when YGE isn't issuing new shares and no one is selling.
YGE is 100000000x bigger than Pledis or Source. Those are just music labels.
As you can see.

Also kiss music shows goodbye. Which is a long time coming. Labels are tired of giving free content away to other companies. Labels are already threatening music shows to stop doing fancams.
This will replace music shows. Weekly performances in a concert setting.
YG has been talking about how outdated music shows are for years.
