Article: Netflix has changed the length of drama series "16 episodes are too long, it's boring"

    1. [+4,942, -29] If the drama's good enough, I'll watch 50 episodes! If it's boring, I won't even watch 6!

    2. [+1,258, -77] I find the 12 episode length to be too short. It's not long enough to bring any meaningful depth to the story and it all feels too rushed. It might work for romcom but maybe not for other genres...

    3. [+858, -365] 12 is too short, I need at least 16 to feel like I'm watching something. I remember mini-series used to be 16 and weekend dramas 50, sometimes extended to even 100 if it was popular enough. Seems like people are getting shorter tempered and less patient as time goes on.

    4. [+121, -1] I'll watch 30 episodes of any well made drama, not just 16

    5. [+98, -0] I don't think people get bored with 16 episode dramas, just that most 16 episode dramas feel like 12 episodes that are forcefully stretched out to 16 so it gets boring the longer you watch. I'll watch anything until the end if it's good enough.

    6. [+91, -2] I think 'Business Proposal' was too short at 12... could've gone to 14... The dude that spread the false rumors never even apologized and the chef was sent off to study abroad.

    7. [+86, -3] Could there be a drama more boring than 'Young Lady and the Gentleman'.. I kept picking it up and stopping because there was nothing else to watch in its time slot...

    8. [+77, -2] The last week of 'Business Proposal' was so boring. Everything felt like a weak wrap up. They had to end things so quickly that I lost focus in the last two episodes.

    9. [+72, -1] There are some dramas that are so great that even 16 episodes aren't enough... I thought the new trend of 12 episode dramas was because there just wasn't enough to write about but I guess it's a strategic decision. I guess it's better than dramas forcefully stretching out their plots an extra 1-2 episodes just because it's popular.

    10. [+70, -2] 'Temptation of Wife' was 129 episodes and I loved every one of them. 'Dae Jang Geum' was 54 episodes and I loved it too.

  • Honestly for some dramas, 12 episodes works because the pacing is better. Like for Business Proposal they definitely would have dragged him finding out her identity until like episode 12-13.

Netflix likes 10-13 episodes because it's bingeable, but most of their dramas end up being too long. Like all of the Marvel series they did could have just been 8 episodes. Both seasons of The Umbrella Academy suffered too despite only being 10 episodes.

It's non-linear television. Let it be as long as it suits the arc.

  • Through the Darkness was so good that it could easily be 16 episodes

also I've recently seen Soundtrack #1

it was amazing but it only had 4 episodes :pepe-sad::peperain:

this is what doesitneedsaying wrote about Han Sohee and Park Hyungsik

"please kdrama gods, pair them up together but this time let it be at least 10 episode show"

so it's all a perspective, for such short 4 ep. drama it makes you crave more asap

but there were also some series with 16 episodes which were awful full of fillers

or even if we talk about dramas with one actress then in Han Sohee's case

Nevertheless just wasn't it and was boring as hell even with just 10 episodes

but My Name had 8 episodes and was hella entertaining

I think problem is that there are currently many good dramas which are webtoon adaptations

so it's hard to make it longer when the 'source' just ends

but for original series maybe it would make sense to do those 12 episodes but when casting/booking actors and offering them contracts, tell them right away that it will have at least 2 seasons, so they will be filming at least 24 total episodes

  • Romcoms really do not have to be 20+ episodes.

They usually recycle the same tropes to extend the plot. I think 12 episodes is fine for a romcom. That way you don't have the additional episodes of push and pull or ridiculous plot devices like amnesia, mistaken identities, and silly misunderstandings to force it to keep going.

If it's an original idea with original characters, then yes, 16+ episodes is fun. If it's just a cute and uncomplicated plot about two people falling in love and realizing their dreams, I think 12 episodes can wrap that up nicely.

  • A lot of dramas drag on unnecessarily just to fit 16 episodes. I've watched some that would have been done in 8 episodes and they put in so much filler just to increase the run time.

I remember there was a romcom I watched where I legit thought I had finished watching because everything seemed to tie in nicely. I moved on and only discovered months later that I didn't watch the last three episodes and I never even noticed. I wondered what would even be in those episodes when the story was done by episode 13.

That's literally the worst. I hate it when you can tell they're at the natural end of the story, but have to toss something in to make it longer even if it's completely illogical.

  • I still think the standard will be 16 episodes.

Even though Netflix has a lot of short episode dramas. They do this annoying thing where they introduce something shocking in the last episode and make you anticipate Season 2 then they take anywhere between 2-5 years to release a season 2.

I prefer the standard 16 episodes compared to Netflix's season 2 strategy

I agree to this one. Some Dramas obviously didn’t had much to offer anymore when it comes to writing so that we had filler episodes just to reach the 16 episode mark and it could be very boring.

People nowadays binge watch so for Netflix the shorter the better.

only 4 episodes were really cruel :pepe-sad: great story with great leads and only 4 episodes :pepe-sad:

me too. i've got used to kdrama format of 16 episodes and i don't have the patience to wait a year or more for s2.

i'm okay with 10 or 12 episodes. even 8. but please don't ever make a 4 episode show again ;(

i haven't watched healer and legend of the blue sea in a while, they have 20 episodes. even if they dragged in the middle i don't remember them being boring. but nonetheless, they could have been shorter, the story would have been fine.

i agree that 4 episodes is too short (it will be better to convert it to a movie).

I am still angry about what they did with Vagabond. In the last 10 minutes, they introduced something shocking kinda like the end of Squid game. Since 2017 and still no plans for season 2.

I feel very little difference between 16 and 20 episodes. Anything more than 24 episodes (if it is 32 episodes with 30 minutes per episode that's fine) i will be hesitant to watch. That's why I am usually reluctant to watch C-dramas even if the plot is interesting.
