Why are digital points so low on gaon??

  • Myriad of factors, the trend is it has been going down ever since 2020 when covid first hit (dropped by 25% in a month) and never really recovered after that. Less downloads plays a part as well as changed behaviors overall when it comes to media consumption. Youtube growing fast and taking marketshares from the domestic services is also a big factor (youtube is not included in gaons calulations)

  • It has to do with the change of Systems that Korean Music Providers are using, it means they are reporting far less data with songs than in previous years when it was given to GAON as largely unfiltered.

Some Korean Music Providers have required proof of Korean Residency which basically has prevented Fans from making multiple accounts

Another late factor is Spotify Korea does not provide data to GAON.

Gaon have always used filtered data (unique listeners/day), nothing have changed there. The loss in streams/users can be seen across the board for all domestic services, not just by looking at gaon.

The harder requirements for using melon etc, was put into effect years earlier, in 2015. With the exception of a few idol groups and their realtime charting, its impact on the userbase was neglible, and the userbase continued to grow until 2020.

Spotify marketshare in korea is nothing and have only been available for one year. The #1 song there on last weeks chart had a total of 93k streams, meanwhile same song had 2,2m on melon, and thats filtered to 1 stream per user and day, while spotify counts up to 10 streams per user and day.

While GAON has always filtered data, it's the amount of data that they get from Korean Music Providers that has changed, it's less now due to tougher requirements for Users and Music Providers filtering for Bot Behaviour

The Charting Systems has no impact on the Data the Korean Music Providers get or would report to GAON, it is a tool to combat sajaegi due to midnight or Zombie Streamers.

Actually I overlooked Youtube Music, another platform that doesn't provide data to GAON. Youtube has a 19.22% Market Share of the Korean Streaming Market

The filter has always been the same (ul/day), the big services had a crackdown on bot accounts and vpn users in 2015, thats it. Ive followed the charts for years and ive never heard or read about their being any change in the amount of data gaon gets, and it doesnt line up at all with how certified streams/downloads looked when they were still available, nor the digital score system that was introduced in 2018.

The primary changes since 2019 have been:

    -Covid
-The new melon 24 chart to combat sajaegi in july 2020, which failed in other ways instead, and was only in use for about a year before melon partly reverted back to the old realtime system

-Further price changes on downloads in 2019, making it even less relevant at the same time greatly reducing the gaon score as one download is worth much more than one stream in the system

    - And youtubes growth is certainly a factor as well
