Why was it easier for the top 3 ggs to be surpassed than top 3 bgs?

  • No 4th gen bg is looking to come close to bts, svt, exo, and nct

While for 4th gen gg, Itzy and aespa seem to have already surpassed rv

Itzy is a top 3 gg internationally

And digitally in Korea 4th gen ggs like stayc, and aespa have outdone twice and rv recent releases

Next level outdid bp last 2 releases (although not to the extent of rv and twice past releases)

When you look at Gallup only bp hasn’t been surpassed by aespa

So why? Bgs seem untouchable but 4th gen gg especially in korea can compete and outdo 3rd gen.

    Approved the thread.
  • bc gg often rely on gp and they are very very fickle.. the moment new/fresh girls debut, most of the older ones are dropped sadly.

bg often rely on fandom & they are often pretty loyal. also, 3rd gen bg's have had more time to grow their fandom, compared with 4th gen bg. for example NCT, it took years before they established themselves & got recognised by non fans as a top bg group, but now they are & they have a very big loyal fandom.

give 4th gen bg a bit more time & they will have probably grown their own big fandom and maybe even get recognised as a top bg.

  • aespa can maybe outdo bp, charts wise in sk but they are not touching them in anything else and also no one replaced twice either

very true. it's extremely sad but the shelf-life of a female idol lasted no longer than 2 years. as soon as newer "fresher" female idol comes out within those 2 years, the public will switch immediately. that's why it's so impressive for idols like Yoona or Suzy to stay on top for so long. But of course they are the outlier.

  • Partially coincidental, partially how ggs differ from bgs.

BTS are a unicum, so they won't be topped by any other group anytime soon.

Girl groups rise faster but also fall faster, boy groups take time to build up momentum (and fanbase) but will last longer.

BP haven't had a comeback for 1.5 year now, TWICE have been doing badly on Korean charts and Red Velvet have only had 1 comeback in 2 years to compare with. Only Aespa is doing better in popularity than RV and TWICE, but ITZY still isn't Top 3 in South Korea in anything and is even declining in SK.

Also internationally TWICE and BP still aren't topped and Aespa and ITZY aren't doing that much better than RV.

So while 4th gen girl groups are up and coming, they still have a while to go.

  • Because girlgroups are more easily replaceable.

  • Not seeing the logic. First, bts are on a league of their own and top 4th gen bgs are definitely looking to surpass the others you mentioned. And second bp/twice haven't been surpassed at all, twice's place is still very much safe and I don't even need to talk about bp

  • Stray Kids is bigger than Exo right now and competitive with 17.

    Stray Kids Thunderous.

    Album sales= 1,310,870

    MV views= 175m

    Spotify TT streams= 82.9m

    Montly Listeners= 5.5m

    Current Melon position & likes= out of top 1000 & 32k likes.

    Seventeen Rock With You.

    Album sales= 2,102,444

    MV views= 59m

    Spotify TT streams= 36.4m

    Monthly Listeners= 3.1m

    Current Melon position & likes= 271 & 86k likes.

So with Seventeen we can see they have a bigger fandom overall, in particular in Japan and Korea, but we can also see from the streams, views and Spotify listeners Stray Kids is more popular overall. Pulling in more than 3 times the views, more than 2 times the streams and nearly double the ML's.

    Exo Don't Fight The Feeling.

    Album sales= 1,335,595

    MV views= 98m

    Spotify TT streams= 35m

    Monthly Listeners= 4.4m

    Current Melon position & likes= out of top 1000 & 62k likes.

So sales are similar but overall steams and views and listeners are higher for Stray Kids and buying power is around the same right now. So I think it's fair to say Stray Kids are ahead of Exo right now.

  • Internationally 4th Gen bgs are actually competing with these 3rd Gen groups so idk what you’re saying. Unless you meant only kcharts because that’s another story.

Also BTS shouldn’t be included in this. They are too much of an outlier

  • 4th gen bgs have no choice but to fight for #2 at this point, bts is too much of an anomaly

  • BTS is BTS league, no one is passing them so long as they're active.

As for ggs it's about public love. If the public don't love a gg then they sink like a rock. I mean we saw with Twice how that works, ngg one day, flops the next.

  • Wrong. The group members that goes to the millitary will be outdid by new bgs. That why many group members postpones their enlistment as long as possible because they knew they will decline after the army callup.

  • BTS is an anomaly, don’t think they should even be in this discussion.

Sure statistically we can see that for international, but their charting in Korea is terrible. They a definitely aren’t at the same level as Exo and Seventeen overall, but if talking about current; then possibly, but that could be up for more discussion because the only things that Skz outdoes both groups in Spotify and YouTube streams out of the many categories. So, I do see where you’re coming from but if we see everything from statistics pov then Skz isn’t exactly close to Svt nor Exo. 😭

  • It's not fair to compare numbers (sales or streams) from different gens when we know kpop experimented a big increase on international fans during the last years. It's also not fair to compare a 10 years old group to 4 year group, let's see how well 4th gen groups will do when they are past their peak. And each group excel in different countries, esp previous 4th gen groups without that much international fans. It's just dumb to compare seventeen or exo who dominate in asia to groups focusing on the west.

  • i don't care. all i know is that BTS and TWICE aren't getting surpassed by any of these 4th gen kids soon. they are the nations groups and kpop representative groups in a whole other league of their own with many achievements/titles/awards to their name.

Have you noticed how Girls Generation is regularly surpassing Twice on the BR list these days? The original nations group may well overtake them this year. If Twice even exist by the end of the year. But don't worry, as long as there is a Sana a Mina and a Momo they will still have Japan.
