I think they'll go as long as they want to. They have a dedicated fanbase and we are not going to up and abandon them even if they are no longer the biggest thing on the charts. The ones who aren't success stans and appreciate the boys for the music they make and who they are will stick around. They themselves have professed to want to stay together making music for many more years - well into their golden years if I recall correctly - so I expect they'll be around for quite awhile.
While we cannot be sure what the future holds, they themselves have left enough clues to let us know they have no plans to disband anytime soon. I trust their own words more than anyone else's in this matter. They are going down in history as legends no matter what, but beyond that, they have found something very special in each other. Seeing that bond, it makes complete sense to me that they will do what they can to keep it, so I'm pretty sure I'm not wrong in my positive outlook for their future together.

As long as they are still releasing music (and probably even after they stop as well), they will still be the most popular korean act globally. In terms of being the current overall most popular musical act in the world, it's not really possible at this point to know when they won't be on top anymore.
