It's a new alternative to the other reactions since people do take offense when someone "likes" a post that they disagree on, or are offended about since it gives them this idea that this person probably agrees with them. Like for instance, a troll could post a thread shading some idol, and some people "like" this to show that they've read their post but it could also be interpreted as agreeing with what the OP is saying.
