Strongest Korean Boy Groups on Spotify At the Moment

  • Did a little thing. Using Chartmaster's list of the most streamed acts, I compared all 7 boy groups with more than 1 billion spotify streams.

For each group, I divided the number of songs above 10M streams (my baseline for what can be considered as "good" for a K-pop b-side) by the total number of tracks the group has.

    Results:

    bts - 190/248 = 76.61%

    txt - 35/54 = 64.81%

    skz - 59/110 = 53.64%

    svt - 42/125 = 33.6%

    nct 127 - 32/118 = 21.12%

    exo - 50/310 = 16.13%

    bb - 21/379 = 5.54%

  • This is very interesting and quite clear which acts have very good discography. If you change to above 100M streams, I’m sure the results will be more dramatic

  • Whay a weird way to look at things . We all know the less songs a group has , the less songs stans have to focus on so. :

a percentage calculated in this manner is so misleading. BTS getting 190 songs most of which are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay above 10 million and closer to 100 million being close in percentage to txt with only 35 songs cracking 10 million(no matter the size of their discography) with one or 2 ( a guess ) getting above 100mil is so wrong lmao.

I think it's important to provide needed context when people give this type of data.

  • Views, streams and popularity doesn't necessarily translate to quality, music is not maths.

And how do you determine quality? Critical acclaim, reviews? Or something else? One person, not an expert music, passing their opinion on a forum about quality to be taken as the arbiter of it?

At times quality = quantity aka numbers, sometimes everything lines up well and sometimes nothing does.

  • And how do you determine quality? Critical acclaim, reviews? Or something else? One person, not an expert music, passing their opinion on a forum about quality to be taken as the arbiter of it?

At times quality = quantity aka numbers, sometimes everything lines up well and sometimes nothing does.

You can't determine objective quality on something that is by nature subjective: the closest would be actual producers, arrengers, music experts or critics thoughts about it but at the end of they day they also have their own preferences.

For me, quantity never equals quality on art.

    Critically acclaim by fans, apparently🤷🏽‍♀️

    Quality is subjective though.

Logically if an act has many songs with high numbers of streams (not just title tracks which might be because fans wanted the act to chart higher), then, it indicates of a high quality discography. For example if Group A has 10 out of 100 songs with 10M streams and compared with another act who has 60 out of 100 songs with 10M, and both nearly debut at the same time. Which act do you think has better discography? If you answer A and said it has better quality, then why are the fans are not listening to the songs as much?

It’s just logical thinking, not emotional thinking.

  • Bad idea: Create a fantasy league where you can compete with other fans and draft idols onto your team. Points come from all the sports stats that you care about: sales, music show wins, Spotify streams.

Pros: Fulfilling the competitive needs of k-pop fans

    Cons: Inciting new blood feuds

  • Quality is subjective though.

You are contradicting yourself: how can something be an indicative of a high quality discography when quality is subjective? Not to mention, music generally is seen by the usual listener as something to relate to, fit their mood, have in the back while cleaning or studying, sing along to... not something to be appreciated as a music piece, also not to mention how people move by trends and anything that is out of the trend is labelled as weird or outdated, regardless of the quality of the piece. There's also a lot of other factors that play a big part on the success of musicians: promotion, company, target, context, etc.

I wouldn't say that the most streamed song of NCT for example is necessarily the one with the higher quality, just as I find a lot of songs with unspired and repetitive beats that hit millions and millions of streams poor in music quality as they lack musical creativity.

I’m fine with whatever you want to think to feel better. Your quality might be my trash and vice versa. As long as we are happy :joy:

You lost me with the bolded bit and the never. Lol

  • You lost me with the bolded bit and the never. Lol

I mean, of course it could coincide but thinking a song is good because it's popular is having 0 critical thinking, or do you love all massive hits in the world and dislike any song that doesn't have 100m of views or streams?

In this video 251 songs are listed (with 205 with more than 10M streams) but songs from mixtapes are included as well as songs where BTS are not the lead artists. And many of the songs that did not reach this mark are remixes, old collabs, some songs from mixtapes so not even real album b-sides.

This method does not seem fair imo because it favorises newer acts too much as spotify grew a lot.

  • Ngl we all have preferences at the end of the day but it’ll be pretty dumb to ignore charts and numbers when they are the only objective unbiased factors

It is even more impressive to create hit songs when people with diverse tastes still tune in to listen. Popular songs are popular for a reason no matter how much you may dislike them. And majority carries the votes

My list doesn't count mixtape and solo releases, they're all songs accredited to the group account.

It's not unfair actually, BTS is the 3rd oldest group of the top 7 yet they have the highest ratio.

You make a valid point, but it was just meant to be a cursory glance at their metrics. Not a full in-depth look.
