None of the above actually.
The whole 4th generation started with The Boyz, who even tho technically debuted at the end of 2017, didn’t start their promotional period till 2018 and started what is now widely considered 4th Gen, even tho they weren’t quite viewed as 4th Gen at the time.
It’s actually pretty widely agree upon that TBZ+ any groups that debuted in 2018 were the start of 4th Gen.

nct dream debut in 2016. i think gens go according to debut year rather than the average age.
i feel like the first 4th gen bg was stray kids?

Don't know, don't care. There are different explanations, I just try to avoid the "generations" when talking about groups, since it seems unnecessary (I just go with what people are commonly using, if it comes to that)
I think it's hard to just draw a line like that.
Some user once said that maybe it would be more appropriate to talk about 'newer groups that are currently on the rise' (or something like that?)
But I don't care enough to think about that too much. I don't understand the importance of generations.
You can call my faves 'whatever gen' you like, they will still be the same and it won't change anything.

It’s technically The Boyz, but SK was pretty soon after.

Agreed that it doesn’t really matter. But in the context of people who talk/ask about generations when there’s pretty much a clear answer for every start, I like those people to be educated.

2018 seems to be the generally considered year

I don't take the generation thing seriously but it's fun to discuss it

What about Stray kids then they debuted in 2017 we can't put them along groups like bts and exo
Idk I generally go off this image I got when I asked a question on generations overall. kpop generations.jpg

NCT dream is weird to me because the members are as young as groups who made their debut in 2018 etc...and they strated to gain momentum after 2016 so it's weird to put them along side 3rd generation boy groups
-
yes, i get that. but generations go according to debut year. they're entire concept was so debut as kids, so they're the youngest third gen group (age-wise) but they're still third gen because of they're debut

I'm amazed that we're almost halfway through the 4th gen and we're still having this debate
Objectively speaking, every big group after ATEEZ is pretty much unanimously considered to be 4th gen, and every big group before them is still highly debated even 3-4 years out. Sooner or later we're going to have to call it or we'll still be having this debate halfway through the 5th gen

Well the reason we're still talking about it it's because when it comes to boy groups each year or so a new boy group starts rising in popularity and strats dominating the Kpop scene it's never consistent while for girl groups it's easy to tell because it's the same group that dominate for a long time

That shouldn't really have anything to do with the generation cutoffs, though
