  • Why are you surprised? They are R&B and Hip Hop artists. They aren't kpop idols. Just like literally every other genre of music, their fans are primarily digital buyers or streamers.

I mean there's a reason many of these artists don't release traditional albums. Gray has been around since 2012 and he's only released one full album and one mini album. Most of them just do digital drops.

  • I mean nobody has a CD player anymore. People buy the albums for the photobooks, which is why it works only with dedicated fandoms who want to collect your photocards etc, not the music. They listen to the music digitally, like everyone else. I'm a little ehhh about these "CDs" being sold tbh, it's just environmental waste for bragging rights mostly. Especially the bulk buying, I wish Gaon/Hanteo put limits in place about how many purchases per person they count and companies stopped encouraging fans to bulk buy.

  • I would like to remind some of you that some trot ahjussis sell 600k in one week...

and ok I get it, but seriously with Gray I thought he will sell like 50k, because of his popularity and the fact that he is also great producer.

When it comes to trot vs r&b/hip hop you're talking about two completely different age demographics. Even in the US older fans typically lean toward buying albums. It's one of the reasons Rock is still such a powerful genre. However if you look at digital trends (which are typically used by younger fans) the top genres are almost completely r&b and hip hop.

These are pure sales numbers for 2021. Extremely rock heavy even though none of these groups (sans BTS)

If you were to go and look at the biggest streaming albums on Spotify I'm willing to get that none of these artists (again sans BTS) would be there.

  • they are hip hop artist

fans of hip hop consumer music digitally they don't really buy album unless they collection them

it's not like Kpop fans who are mass buying album for photocards hoping they get their bias

that's why their sales physically are so low

So someone without this knowledge would think kpop (sans Bts) is HUGE - where hip hop artists would be just as huge - just in digi sales/streaming.

Also when Show me the money returns Gray might sell more - again digital.
