Nysnc only had a $10,000 paycheck each after three years. Why does kpop also get away with similar practices?

  • Nsync will making millions in three years but they had only 10,000$ each. They sued ofc and hopefully got paid way more as the years went on. The man was a fraudster but I hear so many cases of kpop groups getting paid under 2000$ for their whole careers. Like how do groups let their management get away with this?

Things aren't as outspoken in the west where lawsuits are a common thing especially for celebrities it's a messy and long ordeal that leaves a stain on both the artist and the company.

  • I think it has more so to do with the fact that the korean music industry is is small as fuck and three companies own almost at least 70% of the industry (CJ, Naver & Kakao)

Not to mention your 10x as Likely to get blacklisted in korea. The fact that MBC and HYBE has beef because BTS decided to perform at NYE in NYC instead of their tired ass show and no hybe artist appears on their broadcasting station is TELLING! This is why I’m glad Hybe is creating their own instead of relying on current foundation the industry has set.

That's interesting. I bet if you add Hybe now, that number will jump to 90% at least with BTS, TXT, Seventeen, Enhypen.

In the US, it's not much better, three behemoths own about 2/3 of the market. UMG, Sony, and Warner. All the big labels we all know are under one of these three giants.

However, you're right that the Korean music industry is small as fuck when compared to the American one. Everyone thinks Cube is a midsized company, only one tier below the top, but it's smaller than my local department store in terms of employees. Tiny.

  • I wouldn’t say that groups who would be as equally as popular in K-Pop as Nsynch are being payed only 10000$ since a lot of top groups have their own properties exceeding this amount but a lot of groups that are unknown or mid-tier face this problem. Also the duration of the contracts has been reduced. That’s why a lot of lawsuits related to monetary income pop up after most group‘s peak and contract renewal (plus a lot of contracts include heavy n/da). To add, as some user mentioned, people‘s dreams and ambition are being exploited and they especially search for young people who are not as familiar with contracts compared to adults with working experience or lawyers. All in all, I think that companies should at least stop debuting children

  • Because when you're a young teenager and the only thing you want is to get famous and sing on stage, you don't think about protecting yourself legally. You also might think that if you try to, the company will be annoyed, and you will not debut.

These contracts are caused by power-imbalance. Until they are able to re-negociate their contracts ( which should happen WAY before the seven years mark... ), they don't have any leverage.

  • interesting...do you have a source for the NSYNC info?

There was a Youtube Originals documentary about it. It was actually very interesting. It's like an hour and a half though.

    I never knew that

    cheers my friend

  • I never knew this. It’s insane considering how hugely successful they were with multiple diamond album at that point of their career. What kinda contract…

  • Becoming a kpop idol is like taking a loan. The company will provide u training, housing etc. Thats not cheap. so basically they live from hand to mouth until they hit big when income>expenses

  • interesting...do you have a source for the NSYNC info?

A member spoke about it later saying if he gave them $1,00,000 each instead of $10,000 (even that was low compared to the money they brought it)then they would've have been duped by him for longer. I think the documentary is a better watch but Pearlman was a real shady character, he covertly recorded the group Britney was in prior to her solo debut and showed it to members of his boybands like a weird "bonding ritual" <X
