My thoughts on Kpop this year...

  • 1. BP really let me down… one song? That’s it? After all their solo debut/comebacks, this is what we get after years of waiting? The song and MV weren’t it either. I know there’s talk of another comeback later this year, but still I hate it.

    2. Twice reaching their international peak was not something I expected this year. Did I like their recent release? No. But good for them.

    3. I have no hard feelings toward Katseye, but why does my algorithm especially on Twitter keep shoving them (and now Cortis) in my face? I never engage with any of their content, so it’s annoying.

    4. The trajectory of 4th-gen girl groups is interesting. Aespa rising to the top and surpassing Ive and Gidle in Korea is shocking. Two years ago, that was unthinkable. I don’t even know what’s happening with Lsf, but at least Spotify is still their strongest suit. And NJ… well, they lost every injunction, so I just pray for the girls’ freedom this October.

    5. 5th gen… honestly, have you ever seen a generation with this little hype? All the big 4 already launched their new groups, plus two Mnet groups, so competition should be wild right now. But the general public isn’t reacting at all. Weird.

    6. What I celebrated most this year is that we got a lot of inactive 3rd-gen girl group comebacks. I’m still waiting for Mamamoo though… where are my girls?

    7. I dislike the overused “we’re just having fun with our friends” concept newer boy groups keep using. It’s boring. Like, we need something like Growl or Blood, Sweat & Tears again (peak Kpop concepts). Just something that doesn’t remind me of NJ.

    8. 5th-gen girl groups definitely have skills, no doubt. But star quality? Some of them seemed to have it before debut, but somehow these girls being nerfed after they debut.

    9. EXO comeback… please be real… please.

    10. I laughed so hard when an animation song beat everyone this year. Honestly deserved though. Animation is tough, and people forget there are real people that working really hard behind KDH. Seeing them get recognition warms my heart.

    11. Meovv is the dark horse for me. H2H is interesting, but I think people are done of girl groups with too many members. That’s probably their biggest drawback.

    12. When I heard Hybe will debuting another global girl group, I raised my brows. There’s no demand for it. Why? Katseye is already doing amazing why bring competition from inside the house?

    13. What even happened to Kiof? They were everywhere early this year, and now it’s crickets.

It's because people are still stuck on NJ and waiting for their return. Moreover another 4th gen gg is dominating sk right now so nobody cares about the new gen and the other 48575758899983838 temu version of nj.

    People want the REAL nj!

  • They've been hit by scandal after scandal. Their most recent scandal is so scandalous that no one's even talking about it.

Maybe because it's the weekend, but it's all over social media at the moment. I didn't look up the full details, but posts about it is getting a lot engagement.

Its such a dumb nothing burger of a "scandal" as well. Grown adults spend time together!

And the misogyny behind it is astounding. Julie is copping ALL the shit over it, the two boy group boys sometimes aren't even being named, especially in the headlines. It's just "Evil Julie preying on two innocents males cause she's a hussy".

Someone made an interesting comment on this but I think it’s because 4th gen had 2 peaks and we’re still in the latter peak

1st Peak: Izone, Itzy, Idle, Everglow, Etc

2nd Peak: Ive, Le sserafim, Newjeans

I think 5th gen might have a similar trajectory wherein the groups that debut in the next 1-3 years will have a better career than the early 5th gen groups. Either that or 5th gen groups as a whole will just have a longer time actually taking off.

Found it odd that the name of the male idols seems to be hidden or nobody talking about them. I assume they must be nugu because the whole reporting of it feels weird and an invasion of privacy.

  • Aespa is actually a part of both peaks, interestingly enough. 4th gen's rise and fall is bookended by Aespa.

They started the rise of 4th gen with Next Level, which defeated 2nd and 3rd gen leaders that year.

They started the fall of 4th gen with Whiplash, which will prob be 4th gen's last national hit (it is 4th gen's last #1 song as well).

5th gen is being led by unconventional acts. Katseye are international queens, Allday running the domestic scene. Then you have the unpredictable black swan event aka KPDH which has been a huge disrupter in Korean pop music charts.

The more traditional 5th gen acts like Hearts, Kiii, Izna, Meow, and Illit are being pushed to the side. And tbf, two of those groups are trying to eat off of NJ nachos (Hearts and Kiii) and maybe the GP isnt buying it. Meow, Izna and Illit making massive bops but they too are being ignored.

  • Didn’t Rebel Heart go number 1?

  • Exactly! I said sonething about the other day!! 4th Gen is technically the only that is split. Pre and Post Covid peaks.

  • Meow, Izna and Illit are making massive bops but they too are being ignored.

Are they though... or is it that the production value of songs has become stale? I mean. Sure. Songs that climb high, and sell high are great, but are any of them notable enough to stick around five years after release?

I feel K-pop music has become less about uniqueness, and more about genericism. Yes. I know it has been an ongoing trend for donkey's years, but it has become more pertinent in recent years.

Hold Up and Do the Dance were unique (for K-pop), yet I don't feel they will have the staying power of songs gone by 😔

  • Julie seen out with two boys from Verivery.

Granted. They've not been active for about sixteen months.

Like someone else said, she went out with two boy group members and another girl. They hung out at Karaoke for 4 hours and the CCTV video from their room got leaked, they were drinking... The "controversy" comes from like 3 minutes out of that 4 hours of her vaping and being a BIT flirty with the guys.

    ..thats all? :meme-side-eye:

Kpop fans need to stop blowing things out of proportion like okay..? What about it???
