  • The covid killed all local acts who were surviving with only Korean support and with that the hopes of nugus were all killed and only companies which had the wherewithal to expand to overseas survived.

  • the gap between the big 3/4/5 and non big 3/4/5 widened, when the pandemic came

Before Covid, people like GFriend and OhMyGirl had a shot, and other lesser known acts did have some slight shot.

After that, the only nugu girl group to win a #1 in a major show is CSR, via dubious means, and it basically disappeared the next year. H1 Key and Kiss of Life had their moments but their days seem to have ended, and Fifty Fifty as it exists now has become a minor league for those who didn't make it in R U Next.

  • I think youtube getting too greedy is what caused the shift. They throttled the views so hard in order to force companies to buy ads but instead everyone just shifted to spotify (western acts too). Songs got shorter to get more streams/be easier to locate a "killing" part for tiktok, whereas in the youtube era songs were longer and more ambitious because the music video was the center of everything.

  • How far, I do not know. They still have the 'sympathy votes' of the Koreans who continue to support it, but they are not mainstream y'et

Sympathy votes' only worked for their redebut. But their first comeback 'Pookie' went viral for Chanelle. She started a trend that even other idols joined in. Search '문샤넬' on youtube or twitter, you will get what I'm saying. English twitter/tiktok kind of scared of covering ffty fifty news, because they are jumped on by Loona/ex-members' fandom. So you may not see 5050 news there. Besides they have a member named 'Hana/Lim Haram' who was already quite popular before joining fiftyfifty. Her fandom also helped promoting fiftyfifty there.

The act calling itself Fifty Fifty, entertaining Korean soldiers, which is a sign of it being nugus.

At most they will be as big as Fromis 9, who spent 7 years going around one unit after another and only saw some success at its final album with the previous company.

Because of the Korean industry trying to help Jeon, it got more support than usual, but its limitation cannot be completely erased.

  • I don’t really agree with that take. Honestly, it feels like most of the people saying K-pop is “dead” now are mainly stans of the biggest mainstream groups. For me, the pandemic actually opened more doors—online concerts, closer fan interactions, and easier access to content I wouldn’t have seen otherwise. Even after, I’ve never felt starved for good music. I stan boy groups from 2nd to 4th gen, soloists, and I love discovering smaller/nugu groups too, so there’s always something fresh to enjoy. I think a lot of the boredom comes from people only following the most popular names instead of digging for those hidden gems.

Me neither. I mean stats wise on Spotify and Youtube kpop has never been better so 'dead' angle just isn't true. You also way more choice these days. Back in gen 2 the joke was always kpop world tours are just Korea, Japan, few south Asian countries, maybe the US and world tour done. Now its not like that at all.

One thing I do think has gotten worse is kpop outside of the music its terms of interactions, idols perfect image and going all the way down to kpop fans on socials since the pandemic has gotten worse. One could argue that is proof its never been more popular.

  • You are showing a performance video before their current comeback blew up, entered Korean charts and Chanelle went Viral. The comeback went viral 2 months after the initial release. Since then their company promoted the members(specially Chanelle) hard. And found good result. They are actually gaining female fans now, which is good for group's longevity. The thing about fiftyfifty is that Attrakt always gives them Catchy songs. Since none of the OG producers really left (except ablume's producer ASI), they will always get good catchy songs. Unlike Fromise9 whose releases were hit or miss. What I', trying to say here is that, Unlike other mid size Nugu groups, Fiftyfifty has a very trendy modern sound. And also they already established a clear popular Group representative. So they do have more possiblity to blow up in Korea

Yeah, I feel the same way about that. Idols really do seem under pressure to maintain this perfect image more than ever, and while I understand why, it also makes things feel a bit stiff sometimes. That’s actually one of the reasons I’ve been enjoying J-Pop lately. The artists there don’t seem as locked into projecting perfection, and it feels refreshing to see them just be themselves.

And I totally agree about fans too. Since the pandemic, a lot of people have gotten harsher or more confrontational online, almost like the whole fandom space has become less forgiving. It’s definitely changed the vibe compared to before.

Im gonna sound like a real old kpop fan but its partly down to the age. Like minors in kpop has always been a thing but you'd only get 1 per group. Now the whole group is 13 to 16 these days, like the entire 5th gen is mostly children. They're trained to have this cute image from an early age which makes it more as you say stiff I'd even throw in more robotic and that usually means the little to no education.

Yeah, I totally agree with you on that. The age thing has really shifted, it feels like whole groups are debuting younger now, and as an older fan it’s just not something I’m into either. I honestly wish we could see more mature idols debut and be appreciated for their talent and stage presence, instead of being criticized just for being in their late 20s or 30s. That’s not “old” at all, and it would add so much variety to the scene.
