Display MoreFor girl groups making their initial impact and trying to establish themselves as a big player in the industry, I don't think there is anything remotely as important as getting a hit song. It changes the entire perception, trajectory and opportunities for the group.
If NewJeans didn't have the greatest chart success we've honestly EVER seen, starting from their rookie year, with 2 songs from that era still clinging to the charts 3 years later, they wouldn't be so highly sought after by every major brand out there.
It's not just the fact that Magnetic is ILLIT's only major hit, but that their trajectory since then has been downward. That is the exact opposite of what you hope to see from a new girl group. The follow up to a major hit is just as important as the hit itself, and it can be the biggest determining factor in your trajectory.
NewJeans followed Attention and Hype Boy with freaking Ditto.
IVE followed Eleven with Love Dive
Twice followed LOA with Cheer Up and TT
ILLIT had Cherish. And their new song isn't faring much better.
And the public DOESN'T know them. Only K-Pop fans do. They're still very much nugu in the general public.
See above.
Not arguing against this. I've said it many times on here that Hybe/BeLift failed to take Illit to the next level. Cherish was a weak follow up after having a

QuoteI will use IVE as an example. They debuted with Eleven, and they carried on that momentum with Love Dive and After Like. Following up Eleven with those hits established them as a top group and never looked back. If we take Illit for Example, they followed up Magnetic with Cherish, and Do The Dance. I like those songs, but can admit those aren't song that you follow up a mega hit with. Hybe/Belift didn't take advantage of the opportunity of having a mega hit, and allowed magnetic to cast a shadow on their releases.
I'm a firm believer of the important of having a strong follow up after having a hit song. Selecting the right song to follow up with is what separates the good executive producers from the great.I think Illit issue is they didn't pick the right songs, and it's hard to determine that. It's what makes good creative directors so valuable in this industry
Honestly I feel the popularity thing is with most groups. I don't think 5th gen captured popularity yet. At least we can say a group like Qwer is more of the public is aware of them over most of the groups you listed in the OP tbh. Plus, they have 2 songs that charted in the top 10 and all of their promoted songs charted in the top 25 so far I believe. You can argue they're the most popular group if we want to go by chart consistency, brand name, multiple songs known by the public.
I am just unsure how do we even rank 5th gen at the moment because I don't think the groups you listed captured audiences like the top groups of the past.

The fact you're unsure and the lack of a huge hit outside of Magnetic is why I think this is a fun thought exercise.
If we asked this around this time last year, ILLIT would be the no brainer choice for top group and then we'd sort out everyone else, but their precipitous decline across every metric has turned this into a contested battle royale.
The rankings y'all are making make me realize I am absolutely clueless when it comes to a lot of kpop stuff
I would've put Kiss of Life at #1 or #2 (controversy aside)... For international/Western popularity, of course. For Korea, I don't really know about this stuff. But I know Kiof would not be #1 there, or even close, for sure.
I know I'm wrong so please don't flame me, but my uninformed response would've been roughly this... (top 2 are interchangeable)... Western popularity:
Display MoreSo I suppose that would be:
MEOWW
KiiiKiii
I don't think I'm leaving anybody out.
Rank them 1-6 from most popular to least popular.
Go.
My list is:
1. BABYMONSTER
2. MEOWW
3. ILLIT
4. Kiss of Life
5. Hearts2Hearts
6. KiiiKiii
You literally forgot Izna omg.
1. Illit. The only group that actually had a SOTY according to MAMA's own rankings. Everyone in Korea knows Wonhee and Fake Minju.
2. Kiss of Life. They actually charted top 10 and Natty is world renowned.
3. The rest. None of the others, including my beloved Izna, has a lick of impact in Korea. Nobody knows any members or songs from any of these. That's why i dont think this whole list is 5th gen. This is 4.75 gen.
5th gen could be starting as we speak with Katseye/Allday dominance.
