Interesting. I think Japanese girl group market is much different than the kpop market. They will most likely have a much different sound than their other groups, and it's a different market to capture. I don't think NiziU disrupted Itzy or Nmixx. So, they should be alright releasing this group close to their new group.

I assume girl groups are probably more popular than boy groups in Japan. So, they most likely opted to go with a girl group. They're most likely making this group because Japan is still the #2 music market. They most likely saw the success of NiziU and wanted a piece of that pie. I am unsure how popular that group is in Korea, but they seem to be popular in Japan due to having some songs hit #1 on their charts

An example for how well NiziU is doing. So, it makes sense why SM wants in on that. Especially, with Aespa growth across the globe and their successful Japanese debut.
