Should twice of done solos earlier in their careers?

  • I (think) it was a personal option, and they all stated they didn’t want to do solos just yet (I could be confusing them with another group)

But was that a good idea overall? Twice isn’t going to last forever, especially as they all get older , and want to venture off to brand new things,

I was surprised Tzuyu was one of the earlier members to do a solo, I didn’t expect that from her just yet,

The Japanese members are the most confusing, because none of them (truthfully) apart from MAYBE Mina are really “solo” types, but they also don’t seem like they are interested in going back to Japan, they all clearly see Korea as their current home.

Has any foreign K-pop idol turned into a Korean actress?

    SNSD Tiffany.

And yeah. it depends on what their personal goals were and what options were available, so it's hard to say whether it was the best decision or not in my opinion.

  • the question isn't whether twice wanted solo earlier but whether JYP would allow such

they had more individual activities in the first six months of their seven year (right before their contract renewal) than the entire previous 6 years combined...

JYP was still haunted by the ghost of Suzy!!!

but refusing twice individual activities seem to be very strategic on JYP's part...

prior to Twice's contract renewal there had only two groups in the entirety of kpop where all the members that started with the group renewed with the same company (Mamamoo* and Dreamcatcher).

Previously history has shown us GG as a whole have a expiration period and most do not all renew with the same company - they might choose to do different things (acting, MCing, variety etc etc) hell some of them might be even sick of kpop life and want to exit the industry all together and thus it is important (especially more so for female idols) to have individual activities during their first contract period since the mass majority of group don't renew...

individual activities benefit the idol through more income (don't have to share with team members) and greater personal branding and exposure and they get their name out there outside of the group so when that day comes to renew or not they have other options...

how does this specifically relate to twice - well if a company limits one's options by preventing them from individual activities then that group is more likely to renew since they have less options outside of said company...ie Twice and JYP preventing their solo activities - hell the members didn't get individual IG accounts until May 2022 (their contract was renewed in July 2022)

  • i think them not having solo debuts early into their career worked in their favor.

twice is better known as a group than individually and to me having a dynamic like the latter (where one member is bigger than others) could’ve been the groups downfall.

jyp built such a strong group brand that i think its one of the reason twice has lasted so long with all their members still in tack, which is rare for a larger girl group like them.

  • But was that really the case, or did JYPE not allow them to have significant solo activities early in their career?

The All-fan ethos really hurt the individual members who had promises on their own, now they are too old to try anything new.

Short term, yes. Longer term, no, since they will be nobodies when the group disbands.
