How much do visuals matter to you when deciding whether you want to stan a group?

  • a person can stan a group for any reason - it's completely a personal choice

maybe it's the dance, the singing, the rapping, the stage presence, the music

hell one can even be a success stan or stan the company or stan the producer or for whatever bloody reason one wants to including visuals

  • Let's be honest, it's k-pop, it's more than just a music. Of course, visual matters, but not only visual. The idol has strong and weak sides. A blend of them causes to stan or not to stan. Some idols use their talents, other ones their charisma. It's different reason every time. Sometimes idol has the outstanding advantage in something that will cover her weaknesses.

For example, Billlie Tsuki is not the best singer, rather a weakest one in the group, but she is a good dancer and a comedian. Also, her visual is quite unusual like an alien, plus she can do facial expressions. Those advantages cover her disadvantages.

  • I think for most people it comes down to music, I can't imagine stanning a group if I don't like their music. Like I casually follow a ton of groups but I only stan BP, Twice, and BM because I like the majority of their music. On the other hand, I enjoy some of NMIXX songs and really like the group but don't like enough of their music to stan them.

Also I can't think of a single group that doesn't have at least 1 or 2 stand out visuals, so it's never a problem because I don't need the whole group to be 10/10 visuals.

interesting is it that once you like enough of a group's music that you then start to stan the group?

the reason why I ask my friend is that (although I never stan a group per se) - they become my favourites because of their personalities (or at least what we see of them on camera) and group cohesion since I can listen to any group or soloists' music but I generally need something more from said group before they become my favs

eh stan has become a bit more meaningless as I've added more groups to my collection over time. I guess I should've said both music and enjoying the members of the group. That's why I gave the NMIXX example, I do really like the girls in the group and will watch their content but I wouldn't say I'm a "stan" because I don't like the majority of their music. It's all arbitrary in the end though, my interest in groups ebbs and flows.

Because I primarily consume K-pop through music on Spotify, so the visual aspect doesn't make a difference. I rarely watch actual music videos.

  • It doesn't matter to me at all, although I get what you're saying and obviously it's nice to look at pretty people in general.

For me personally, the first impression that might make me stan a group isn't the impression of their looks but rather their charisma that they show in the performance and the music. A good example is Twice - my bias is Jihyo and I fell for her after watching Perfect World and seeing her amazing performance (that transition will replay in my mind forever, when I listen to the song), but I actually think that the most beautiful and visually attractive member is Mina and Sana. Still, they're not my bias, because it's Jihyo's personality, talent and drive that made me choose her. I find her beautiful too, but it's just an addition.

Music is the most important factor for me, first and foremost. I could not stan a group who releases music that I don't like, as I more often listen to my ult groups on spotify, than watch the MVs. I used to be a Blackpink fan and liked the girls personalities (found them beautiful too), but since I stopped liking the music they release, I stopped stanning them.

However, if we're speaking about visuals only, one thing that is important for me in choosing groups I stan is also their concept. So visually, I do look at the concepts and if it's something I like but it doesn't matter to me if I find any members beautiful or not, it would not affect my stanning them.

After the first impression, which for me is whether I like the music and any members catch my attention with their performance, as I get to know them more what makes me really stan a group is also their personalities, the way they act together, if I have fun watching them perform and in variety shows and if I can connect to them in any way. If I only like the music and concepts but don't connect to the group, I become a casual listener. :-)
