Why dont labels invest in longevity instead of teaching fans to look for a new gen of groups?

  • cos younger fans have no worries and less obligations, so they spend their money on stupid things like 100 albums to get the photocard they wanted


    so it is also stupid thinking you can`t cheat time. Those kids eventually get old and move one, and younger kids think people 5 years older than them are OLD PEOPLE... will only stan people closer to their age, aka teens


    and yes, we all know most fanboys from teen girl groups are old men...but some are young too

  • well it's because that's the way it's always been and not just in kpop

    plus there are many factors to consider beyond just kpop


    1. female GG - all members DO NOT newer with the same company they started with (only 4 in kpop's entire history)

    and maybe not just GG but BG as well - some might be sick of being an idol - some might want to get into acting or leave the entertainment industry completely - some might want a normal life and start dating/family


    and thus companies can't just expect groups to continue forever


    2. do you think the groups you liked when you were a teenager are the same as those you'll like when you are 30?40? 50?


    3. groups disband and thus the product will need to be replaced

    what you are thinking are like maybe 1% of the total number of kpop groups out there

    the vast majority of them are nugu and don't even survive till 1st contract negotiations

  • American Singers that have longevity achieve so due to it being a Talent based System, they don't need to shake their asses and can last decades as long as they take care of their Vocals.


    Kpop Idols are chosen through a Visual based System, this means Looks, Dancing, Youth, Weight and Chastity are more important than Vocal Talent. Aging will naturally corrode a Visual based System, the survivors being Actors/Actresses, genuine Vocalists and even less Idol Rappers.


    There are very few surviving non-Kpop Companies in SK, largely due to SK's Music Retail Market being unable to support them as the biggest consumers are Kpop Idol fans.

    To be sustainable, brands have to be innovative and come up with new products every now and then. In hope that one of it will grow and become star products for the next period.

    Which honestly is a thought process that needs to change for the wellbeing of the talented people making those greedy monsters money. People are not inanimate objects.

    But these are corporates. It is again a tough trade-off decision. Profit or social wellbeing inlcuding taking care of employees


    Again, there are more complications to the equation. Like someone else mentioned in previous pages, once idols get popular, the contract nego gonna be expensive. So from POV of corporates, you can fault them to get prepared to lose the old group and hence they need a new bright star group.


    Take example of YG who relied too much on BP for past years and didn't groom new stars (baemon) until end of BP's contract. It was too late once it realises contract nego for group fall off. Fail on YG management side.


    On contrary, a good example is SM. While i generally not a big fan of SM and they had fair share of shady moves, their business management over the years have demonstrated to be much better than peers. First, they well thought out the succession planning for their groups (not the management though). New groups are released when their seniors still on peak/start to decline, not until end of contract. Diversification is key. And second, they also keep all their old groups. I believe SM is one of the company that have most of its group extend the contracts (bar a few exception cases like CBX, fx). I believe SM kept the old groups out of corporate values cause in no way that those members wont have good contract out there. So, SM definitely giving deep cut of the profits to artists in order to get the contract renewal. It is a balanced move to keep old group while continue to brew new groups. Though it creates more issues like resource distributions, civil wars between fans etc

    Boy Groups did not go at once, and they went one by one, so usually that happens after their first contract. Fanbase then is torn and does not support fully as like when the group is full.


    And i guess it has now become a habit, traditions and its hard to break it.


    Also because kpop companies are like a brand. They dont operate like western companies so you would need to be always putting new groups to stay on map. You dont also see big 4 companies take older groups formed under other company like the west, cause it is not their "brand"

  • It's all about culture


    For some reason, kpop/j-pop fans prefer youthful beauty.

    This is why idols are obsessed with looking as young as possible.

    And this is why debuting a new group every year becomes beneficial.



    The West is the opposite,

    no one wants to look like child, they like mature image. Even stars who are still children behave like adults

    So even after a while, seeing a 50-year-old idol doing pole dancing didn't bother them at all. (yes I'm talking about Jelo)

    Kpop is a youth market

    New generations of youth want newer idols to stan. "fresh meat"


    Idols rely on glamour and brand image, and those get diluted with familiarity, so the market craves new ones


    Cost wise debuting a new group vs. Promoting an existing one, isn't much different, if at all debuts can be cheaper due to lack of expectations from established fandoms.


    Easier for the agency to control newer groups, than those who have their fame and fandom. Even revenue wise, after the 7 years are done. Agencies get greater share in the initial years.
