Jungkook's Seven Accused of Plagiarizing Fin.K.L's Time of Mask

  • According to Alphabiz on the 22nd, Jungkook’s solo track “SEVEN” has allegedly borrowed key parts from Fin.K.L’s “Time of Mask,” released in 2000.

A source knowledgeable about the situation told Alpha Economy, “The key chords of the main melody of Jungkook’s ‘SEVEN’ and Fin.K.L’s ‘Time of Mask’ have been confirmed to be identical.” They added, “Some well-known composers have also stated that the songs are harmonically the same.”

“SEVEN” by Jungkook was co-composed by five individuals, including Andrew Watt, Cirkut, Jon Bellion, Latto, and Theron Makiel Thomas. Moreover, the plagiarized Fin.K.L’s “Time of Mask” was composed by Yang Joon Young, one of K-pop’s original and renowned composers.

Additionally, Yang Joon Young’s side has sent evidence, including the music and musical notation, to one of HYBE’s main producers.

HYBE responded unofficially that they could not review and forward the related documents, citing Bang Si Hyuk, HYBE’s Chairman of the Board’s trip to America, and therefore have not provided an answer. In relation to this, HYBE has not issued any official commentary or response.

Meanwhile, Jungkook’s solo debut song “SEVEN” has topped the Billboard Global 200 and Global (excluding the U.S.) charts for five consecutive weeks.

  • Its a stretch but oh well.

Not a stretch. It's a pacific ocean reach. And this comes two days after kmedia reported the song made $1.5M in royalties when the song has been out for more than a month.

Not only does the two not even sound remotely the same, this producer waited until he saw he can take his shot because of the money the song has made. If he felt so strongly about the song why wait until almost the 40th day to make this claim? :eyeroll-pepe:

I doubt the western producers have heard of that song but if they want a piece of that pie, nothing new.

  • It's not a reflection on JK since he didn't write the song, but I guess some royalties may get further divided.

Ves, have you even listened to the song? And this is far more unbelievable that two white dudes from the US would even know who Finkl was. This is another case of Ed Sheeran and that Marvin Gaye producer wanting money from the royalties his song made.

No, you're absolutely right, how would these western writers have even heard this?

  • Admittedly I have not! I should...

Please do. It's so comical that they are even being brave saying that outdated song sounds like anything from the 2010s and above :skull: MBC and SBS reported on the song making $1.5M in royalties all over the news in SK this past Friday and they had a eureka moment two days later? Okay, sure.

And Bang PD being in the US while all this Scooter mess is going down won't nip this foolery in the bud soon.

  • The chord progression for seven is not something very common for pop song

    It is repeated IV7-III7-VIm-Vm7-I

I tried to listen to the fin kl song but it’s not really applicable anywhere? But i’m open for correction

Are you fucking kidding me? You don't know who Fin KL is? They were the second biggest girl group after SES. How sheltered are you?

    your Seven chords are correct

    - its key is B major

    finkl's song goes:

    vi / II7 / IV-V / vi, in D flat major

so if both songs were in C major:

    SevenFmaj7E7AmG7 C7
    Time of MaskAmD7F GAm

They're not remotely similar chord progressions

  • Yess from the first listening the second chord is way off and throughout the song i just can’t apply the progression
