Is CJENM being greedy and foolish by not canceling KCONLA tomorrow?

  • Normally i am very cynical and suspicious of the hacks in the weather industry. So many clickbaity sensational headlines crying wolf about weather hazards, the Weather Channel's massive scandal when one of their reporters Mike Seidel was caught faking strong winds, our own local reporters here in Hawaii repeatedly making mountains out of molehills to generate views and tv ratings.

But every once in a blue moon, these hacks are proven right and something truly horrific happens, like the Houston floods, Tampa storm surge, and of course the Maui tragedy.

So my question is, what is going to happen tomorrow when Hilary passes just east of LA as a tropical storm? Is CJENM risking a major public backlash by not canceling Sunday's activities and then having massive problems and even safety issues at the venue which make front page news here or in Korea? Conditions are expected to be very unpleasant but not catastrophic (at least by standards where i live). 25-40mph, 1-3 inches of rain. Basically a really bad storm. But a really bad storm in my state could mean something much worse in LA, i just dont know.

  • I mean it will be safer indoors than outdoors

but in same time people need to travel to that event and that's a problem

or should I say coming back home after event might be a problem

  • Well, I'm saying yes. A lot of facilities have been scheduled to be closed and some events have been forced to be moved and cancelled. They are closing the zoo and some parts of Disney too.

These were mostly events held in open-air venues though.

I think it'd be pretty bad either way. Like if they cancel and nothing happens, people who flew out to attend the event will be pissed, but it'll be even worse if they allow the event to continue and things do get bad to the point people are trapped in the Con until the storm passes. Especially if we do experience power outages and flooding as predicted. I can already see twitter and the news being a mess if this happens. They could also cancel the evening events since it's not supposed to get REALLY bad until around 6 pm. But, it will still be a nightmare for people trying to travel from the Con. Here are the current predictions for tomorrow's weather.

  • What is the altitude of that place when arena is located? It's 25 miles from Long Beach so I think water shouldn't go that far?

That's not how hurricanes work. This is a storm and it will have already gathered it up over the ocean into itself. Proximity to the ocean does matter, but so does the strength of the storm and how "wet" it is. Some hurricanes are wetter than others. And the real danger is not just the rain itself, it's combined with the high winds.

Not sure, but Crypto is near Dodger stadium, and they rescheduled their Sunday game. So I'm assuming they expect to see something over there.

It's also not just the water at the venue. There is also the possibility of power outages affecting multiple areas, which could also happen due to high winds. Also, I'm sure not everyone is staying next to the arena, and the highway and travel will probably be affected if things get bad.

Oh god. How to put it in words. Flash flooding can happen with just rain. But it would be more dangerous if 1-2M high level water would also enter the land and go that far

There are a lot of dangers to be had and people living close to the beach are definitely the first urged to evacuate, but there's more danger than just flooding. I'm originally from Miami and we can be a bit blasé about hurricanes getting hit so often, but there are a lot more dangers besides flooding including roofs being blown off, downed trees from wind, power outages and the ground can be easily electrified when a tree hits a live powerline. All have happened in Miami and it should not be taken for granted.
