Neurodivergent people, how do you enjoy music?

  • I have autism and I was thinking about the way I enjoy music and how that compares to other people who are neurodivergent.

Most of the time I listen to music depending on my mood, but not the way you'd think. I like a lot of goth music and most people would consider that to be sad, but I find it to be my happy music. I love depressing love songs and the more miserable the better. I usually only listen to happy music when I'm overstimulated or really understimulated. Generally, my music is uptempo and high energy, but I also love midtempo and ballads when I'm in the mood.

I take my music listening very seriously. I have to have the perfect position for every song or else I'm gonna freak out. The environment has to be close to ideal for me to enjoy what I'm listening to. Usually, I lay starfish on the ground and close my eyes, but when I'm in public I have to be sitting as close to the floor as possible without getting judging looks.

I've found that music gives me different bodily sensations depending on the genre. Synth-heavy dance music gives me what I call "brain tickles" whereas a guitar ballad would feel like ocean waves in my chest. Sometimes I experience synesthesia. It's kind of scary because it's out-of-the-blue flashing lights and the colors are way too bright.

Anyways, that's my spiel. Please do tell me about yourself because I'm very interested. Neurotypicals can share as well, but mark yourself as a normie. And if you don't have anything nice to say, keep that off my thread.

  • Neurotypical here and much of what you write sound very familiar to be honest.

I myself can't listen to music on public transport for example or really anywhere where there's other people around. Listening to music is a very personal experience for me and crowded places stress me out so much I simply can't focus enough on the music.

I can't listen to music on my way to work either, because I'd then start to associate those songs with all the negative emotions I feel, so I only ever listen to music on my way home.

I also associate sounds with colours so some songs "feel" purple for example (no, not BTS songs), while others might feel yellow or green to me etc.

So I guess I can only truly enjoy music when I'm alone in a place I feel comfortable and when I know I won't be interrupted.

  • I have a whole playlist of songs that I can't listen to because they've been associated with bad things (or the color orange because orange is gross)

    Yeah, me too unfortunately. :(

I hate when that happens, but it's difficult to avoid sometimes. An unexpected phone call can suffice.

  • Each song I listen to is different to the mood of the song before & after it a lot of the time. I am all over the place. Generally though, once I'm in the mood for something I go to my selection of numerous & unique playlists for that. I really just like music in general. I like to analyze things, especially music. I like exactly all genres except for country. Like literally all of them. Obscure ones? Sure. Mainstream or in between? That too. Anything. I just like music in general, I tend to get very passionate about a lot of things in life.

OMG SAME! I have like 400 playlists for this very reason.

Yea I have pretty eclectic tastes too and appreciate songs from all genres, even country. Good music is good music IMO.

As for labels, I have never ascribed to that as I think its all a spectrum. I have anxiety and OCD though - though it went undiagnosed until I was an adult and could seek help myself.
