Why did Ryan Jhun, a seasoned music producer, select Pop as bugAboo's title track?

For other groups that release bad songs, you can imagine that maybe the CEO and producers could have thought the song was pretty good.

But Ryan Jhun has produced countless hit songs and has been producing for over 10 years. He knows what a hit or "good song" sounds like, and clearly Pop is a more niche style that will not appeal to a lot of people.

So why would he choose this song for the first comeback of his new rookie group?

Sounding unique is a valid strategy, but Pop is one of the worst songs I have ever heard.

On the other hand bugAboo's debut (produced by Ryan Jhun; Pop isn't produced by him) sounds very traditional, of good quality, and acceptable.

It is possible he didn't have time to produce the title this time. (He assisted in producing the b-side of the album but his name is listed last out of 4 producers) But that doesn't explain why out of all the possible demos he could have chosen, he put confidence into this one.

I just don't get it

And I just noticed he produced Real Love for OMG (first name in the composer list). So maybe his ears for titles aren't as great as I thought. But even so Real Love was just forgettable and you forget what it sounds like, but Pop actually sounds bad. I can imagine him thinking Real Love is understated but good (or something) or having a bias because it's his own work, but how did he approve Pop?

He also produced My Turn for Cravity but in this case he is the last name on the list of 4 composers. And again OMG and Cravity are established groups, but bugAboo is a new group that is not doing very well and he picked this weak song for them on purpose, again, I just don't get it

I'm not sure about charts, but Hopefully their unique and fun sound can help them cultivate a fandom who likes that stuff.

Possibly those are assets that he saw, but how many other songs could have been catchy without being controversial in any way (like their debut song)

I doubt any of the group's songs are known to be on charts

According to chart account, each title track reached a similar peak around #40-50 on Bugs, but for Pop comeback, both the title and b-side charted there.

He did not produce the song, he chose it from other producers, that is what is even more confusing because he chose one that is obviously not traditionally popular on purpose

If you mean that as a reason for why he didn't produce the title (maybe not having confidence in his inspirations and having more confidence in other famous producers). Then OK but still why this song

Also, bugs charting is irrelevant. Anyone can chart there, so it's not worth talking about.

Cause it's talk-singing kind of like Itzy "Keep your head up" and Mafia in the morning chorus, which is controversial, called childish, screechy, etc.

And there isn't an obvious good part of it

You're misusing the word "controversial". It implies a big dispute or division happened because of the song... when nothing like that happened. You're making a mountain out of a molehill.

Idk if there is any widespread disagreement over whether it's bad or good, but it just comes off as bad in the most obvious way, it sounds like it would be controversial cause it has controversial music elements, just like NCT songs are obviously hard to digest even if you don't know how anyone else reacted, Pop is obviously hard to remember and understand the "pop" the first time

Maybe more like weird or non-traditional than controversial but basically it equates to the same thing

I forgot to say earlier, the bigger problem is that it sounds lazy/weak not that it is so unpleasant that you never want to listen to it.

I don't think either is more cohesive but maybe Pop has a better flow than bugAboo which is more like verse here, prechorus here, chorus here, bridge time in a more obvious way
