It doesn't make sense, cause album sales are still a criteria for ArOTY. Maybe they just wanted to be shady or making people talking about lol.

That's a very surprising (and welcome) change.

And I honestly wonder if it has been influenced by BTS's enlistment as giving it to BTS pretty much always made sense so people never thought too much of it. They dominated digitally and physicals.

But without them if you have BG's that have little to no relevance in South Korea dominating album sales it makes it a very contentious award. This definitely opens up the award for more girl groups which I can imagine is the intention as they are the biggest acts in South Korea by a long way for the 4th gen.

It makes sense if you're MAMA. The difference between the big girl groups and boy groups in South Korea for the 4th gen is too wide.

After PTD in Las Vegas and the Busan Expo, BTS doesn't really need to win that category anymore. But if they do, they have the third most gaon points this year after IU and that trot singer. Artist of The Year is more likely the only one they might win.

Getting rid of physical sales for an Album of the year award is plain stupid. It would make more sense to get rid of album sales for Artist of the year but it would still be stupid. Sales is still one of the most relevant stats for success and popularity. All awards shows should just be like the VMA and be transparent with making up the rules and saying we will give the awards to whoever we want whether they attend or not. Shift the focus to performances and give less awards since they aren’t a measurement of anything.
