What is the main reason of a fandom to buy albums?

  • Ah I see. But what do you guys think in this case?

Would people still bulk buying even if there is only 1 ver? (Because they want to support the artist)

Yes, they will. The buyers pretty much exist in 2 groups, well 3.

1.) Those who can buy what they can afford, usually the younger fans, 1-2 of each version if they can. These will just buy 1 copy

2.) Those who will only buy one of each copy, whether its 1-4 copies or more, and in this case, they will only buy 1 copy.

3.) Bulk buyers, the number of versions don't matter, they buy the amount of whatever their pot size is, the number of version does not matter, it'll just be pot size divide by cost of album.

Those who dont normally bulk buy wont regardless of album copies and those who bulk buy will bulk buy regardless of album colpies. Very few fans who is not already part of a bulk buy group, will put whatever they can afford into as many copies as they can.

  • I think there are differing reasons which have all been said in the comments before me...

some people buy 1 - open it listen to the CD enjoy the extras etc etc

others buy to support their favs

    others buy for the PC

others buy for the "numbers" (maybe they are success stans)

others are rich and buy lots

others might buy for the chance at a fansign etc etc

That's not entirely true. Bulk buying multiple versions most of the time are photocards collector. Imagine in the case of Seveteen where there are 13 members, it is hard to collect all photocards of your bias. In that case, bulk buying to increase chance of pulling the pc is quite normal in most fandom. The extra copies can be sold or traded

I can cite myself as example. I collect OT4 BP and aespa, hence i bulk buy all versions to ensure i get all 4 members. If there is no randomised photocard, i will definifely buy much lesser copies. So im definifely fall between type 2 and 3 you listed. I dont allocate a pool of money to bulk buy for sake of bulk buy. I bulk buy with a reason

Agree, there's definitely the group between 2 and 3.

It also depends if you're trying to get all the cards for every single member or if you're just aiming for your bias because you do hit a point where it's cheaper to just buy the missing card individually one Ebay.

But I do believe photocards will always be randomized for that reason. Most companies goal is to actually target the big spenders vs the majority. Video games for example that uses a random loot box system get's all their revenue from only a fraction of the customer base, forgot the exact % but it was a small fraction.

There are also the people who buy them simply to get into things like fan sign events.

Newjeans album photocards are not randomised. Im actually surprised that they got so much sales with not randomised photocards (but at the same time, ADOR js super generous with PC - u get at least 5 PC per album so it is a plus point to incentivise buying)

But yea for OT4 like me, easier to collect via bulk buy albums since i dont lose out for getting less popular members. For fans that collect only 1 member, it will be cheaper to buy the photocard loose.

  • I actually have a cd player in my car and I don't have unlimited data on my cell phone plan, this allows me to enjoy the music i collect, without wasting data. I also enjoy collecting the albums and supporting my favorite artists, I have a huge collection that i've tried to dwindle down but damn it's hard lol.

The only time i "bulk buy" is for my top groups

It's to collect the photocards and what other inclusions come with it. I mean i bulk bought d-crunch's latest album and i can't even resell them and that was just to collect chanyoung and hyunoh. I bulk bought a shit ton of up10tion novella albums for all the members, and still have a shit ton left. Of course I have my ways of getting the missing stuff for a decent price without buying more albums, but the fun of collecting is buying the albums and not knowing what you're going to get in them. I also do this for my "nugu faves" becuase it's harder to find them and collect them so instead of searching to no avail i sometimes just buy albums and hope i get different items in them.

woah turns out there are quite a few that are still using the cds?

and yeah, I love your point about the needs of data plan to play our favorite song...

this makes me wanna buy a cd player...

i'm so weird but yeah depends on what i'm in the mood for.

fans sometimes also bulk buy for fancalls. I can see this being the same with 1 version and/or no photocards.

  • Swag, Collectible, Support.. but the most base reason is to buy so that their faves can get some sales-records over others.

As crazy as those who sent money to one of the Jenner-Kardashians so that she can claim to be the youngest ever Billionaire.. never mind that she is already a multi-millionaire.

    Obsession.

Companies know this well and encourage/promote it.

Barely a handful actually listen to music on CD players etc.

Now that companies are moving away from even issuing physicals and are just selling packages with access to some special physical content or NFTs,

Even the excuse that they listen to CDs will be gone.
