K-pop achievements make no sense

  • I don't think most kpop fans understand achievements is relative. Not only is the environment kpop in completely different between generations, with how quickly kpop westernized, I'd argue even the kpop environment is completely different 1-2 years ago.

Just like how one wouldn't compare the price gas or milk 10 years ago vs now, I don't see how someone can argue a group is larger or bigger based on album sales alone. There has been massive "inflation" in this area.

With the spread of the digital area, we're also seeing inflation in views, streams, etc.

Achievements shouldn't really be used as a way of comparing groups but simply an objective measure of how a group is doing in the current state of kpop at its current time.

They're considered 'bigger' in terms of time in the industry and knowledge of the industry as well.

If we're talking numbers and overall popularity numbers, Twice and Blackpink dwarf SNSD any day.

If we're talking relative impact and influence, then it's a more complex discussion:

SNSD literally brought girl groups back on the map and are the original 'Nation's Girl Group'. The members are still regularly in those monthly top influence rankings as well, and many trainees and current idols still look to SNSD as role models. This is all after 15 years in an industry where 99% of groups don't make it to the 5-7 year mark. Even more rare, all of the members have successful individual careers and individual fame as well, even without the group name.

Now for TWICE and Blackpink - we can't say as much about staying power yet bc both groups are still at 7 and 6 years respectively. That being said, they are making it to where 99% of groups can't. Both groups have expanded KPOP onto the global stage - something SNSD never fully accomplished. TWICE has become the new nation's group and taken over Asia while Blackpink has exploded internationally into the west. Many new idols will also state various TWICE/Blackpink members as their role models too and learn their dances as trainees.

    Long story short:

Your idol's idol is TWICE and Blackpink

Your idol's idol and their idol's idol is SNSD

  • let's be honest, bp is bigger than snsd and twice combined. snsd's desire to remain relevant through tv is amazing but bp brought the girl crush era and female fans for girl groups.
