i mean, i get that a lot of this stuff is portrayed on social media as retail therapy and "buying this thing will make you feel better!" but i think the concept of "self-care" is a lot simpler than that and actually needed. i think we do need to take care of ourselves and allow ourselves grace and indulgence. but i can understand it from the perspective of social media makes it toxic
In my experience the people who thought me taking care of myself was toxic usually were using me for what they needed and/or wanted and did not care for my well being
i felt bad for it before but i realise that always taking care of other's emotions and neglecting my own is toxic to myself.....
I DO THIS, I always take care of everyone and then I am drained and tired. My therapist has had me practicing saying no when I am tired or exhausted

how would taking care of ourselves better and making us feel confident be toxic?
just a summary of that video, the word self care is actually stolen from an American black activist writer. She used it to describe self care as not blaming yourself for failures that are systematically agaisnt you, instead fight them.
So now the culture took her word, and sorta started selling us products with "self care" branding as a solution to problems we face bc of the rigged system.
So in that sense I do think its toxic. Face masks and chai lattes cant do much for the stress we feel from work place sexism. Its just a band aid

How can taking care of your physical and mental health be toxic? It's important and everyone should do it. I do and it helps to unwind after a hard shift at work and especially my anxiety. Without self care, people burn out and that's where mental health issues can set in. I encourage everyone to take time out for themselves. You deserve it.
