  • Tbh I disagree a bit. I think celbes know and sell their personal lives as well for profit. All publicity is good publicity for many.

Some are notoriously private and may hate it. But I don’t think it’s a blanket statement that celebs don’t profit of being on the spotlight

Yes I believe most of them like being on spotlight but I am sure not for their private lives but for what they do. I dont think they all sell their private lives bc they enjoy it but they kinda have to bc this is how industry works and they have to survive somehow :eyes:

  • I think it’s the most common thing to expect out of being a celebrity. Tbh I haven’t even seen extreme cases of paparazzi invasions for idols.

There are some in western for example where their every single move is captured and posted and I always felt bad.

But in kpop for a couple of pics and people talking about it, kpop fans loose their cool.

I mean, someone leaked a CCTV picture of Jungkook because of “gossip” and I’m pretty sure that was illegal ^^ I don’t think they’re trying to hide something when they go to, like, a high end store holding hands because people talk, but I do feel weird knowing that a picture was taken when the person thought they were by themselves, you know what I mean?

If that was the case there won’t be so many “PR” relationships. Aren’t PR relationship some of the most common celeb gossip? Whether it’s to create buzz for their latest song or movie, even relationships and personal feuds/fights etc are PR stunts.

There should be some boundaries, but for the most part, i agree. Idols in particular have signed up for a certain type of celebrity life. Kpop isn't just about selling music. They are selling that parasocial relationship as much as the music. (That many of us are just interested in the music/ performances is beside the point. Kpop's bread and butter is that idol/fan bond which is why they give us all those shows, lives, and other access. ) Fans being invested in the idol's offstage life is expected and encouraged by the industry. Discussing their private lives increases fan engagement. It's a feature, not a bug, whether people like it or not.

  • I think there's been a shift in stan culture somewhat. It used to be much more normalized to discuss things, good or bad. It was shameless gossip after all.

Ever since idols started to voice their discomfort over certain things their fans were discussing, K-pop fans have been more considerate of that.

I get it, but K-pop is an industry that's also known for publicity and buzz just as much as the music. We're essentially on a forum dedicated to K-pop gossip; it was built on that.

  • Eh I don't really think western and korean celebrities should be compared tbh. Western celebrities wouldn't get away with 0.01% of the things they do if they were kpop idols. The reaction to idol's private lives and western celeb's private lives should warrant a difference in how much we gossip about these things. In the usa, most of the time celebrities dating isn't a scandal, in fact it's usually encouraged. Whereas for kpop idols, a dating 'scandal' is worse. It shouldn't be, but that's just how it is at the moment, so I think our interest in kpop idol's private lives should be kept to a minimum because 1) they've shown barely interest in sharing things about their private lives to us so we should respect that and 2) it has an effect on their careers.

  • I don't really care about idols' personal lives. I don't even follow some of my own faves in social media lol

But anyway I think it depends on how much an idol shares about their personal life. If someone is extremely private and quiet but people pry on their personal life it would feel invasive even if they are a celebrity. It's different with idols who personally willingly share bits about their lives, it's obvious they don't mind :pepe-shrug:
