The ranking is good for randoms recognizing artists, that doesn't mean that those same random people actually listen to those artists. This thread is about which groups are most popular in Japan overall, not about whether people can recognize their face.

Obviously it isn't about music since the "public recognition" from this poll is extremely disproportionate to what people are actually listening to in Japan.
-
Its from a Nikkei "Talent Power Ranking", which surveys people about recognition of celebrites (comedians, actors, artists etc). Its not about music.
The female version for idols:
So they took an unrelated poll out of context when it has nothing to do with musical success, I should have been expecting that tbh.

Side note: I really just took one troll to derail this entire thread huh

Well, the truth is that the only ones who are interested in sales are the fans xd and yes, kpop is not a trend, it is a niche
So the general public just doesn't consume music? They just look at an artists and say "yeah, I've heard of them" and then proceed to never listen to their music?

They are 900k in japan. Sorry i committed a crime for not saying proper 900k instead of rouding off to million. What a sin
They are certified for over 1M shipments in Japan anyway

stream parties are not spam to increase the number of streams?
You are literally saying these things while giving no proof to back up your claims. Have you analyzed every sale and stream BTS has earned in Japan? How would you know if it's all fandom or not? By that logic, I could say anyone who has sales and streams are fandom driven because I say so.

This sounds more like "I can't accept the fact that BTS are popular in Japan, so I must resort to the tried and tested argument of mass fandom buying and streaming"
-
So let's get this straight, BTS has the most people listening to their music but that is somehow invalid because random people don't recognize them on the street as much as acts who are all over TV and promote far more than they do
-
But what good does people being able to recognize an artist do when they can't match up to others in music consumption

Personally I'll put EXO and BP on the same rank, since EXO have better physical sales and touring number it seems. And maybe I'll put Ikon at no 5.
Anyway, overall 3rd gen groups are very weak compared to 2nd gen groups in Japan. From 2nd gen groups we have TVXQ, Bigbang, KARA, SNSD doing extremely well in Japan, other groups like 2pm, Suju, Shinee were doing pretty good as well.
Overall, it seems like only BTS and TWICE would really be able to compete with or do better than 2nd gen in Japan.

None of this changes the fact that only 10% to 15% of BTS fans can keep them charting forever. lifetime UL's will always go up for SD as long as it's in the top 100 since, well new users join Melon each month/year and will doubtless make their way through the top 50 songs since Melon direct's listeners to the 24Hits/formerly real time chart as the primary way of absorbing new music.
I mean it's not like their fans don't make it a public point of interest to specifically stream and mass buy their music. All fandoms do it sure, but most fandoms having 10-15% participation on Melon would be likely 10-20 thousand listeners. Barely enough to scrape top 800.
A real example of fandom mass streaming would be KKB, Spring Day only recently surpassed it to become the #1 most streamed song on melon despite the difference in ULs being 7.2M to 3.9M.

You think all 780k are active and just fans? That 780k includes gp. No song can smash week after week without gp support . 7 million uls for sd are fandriven too? Gallup polls are fandom driven too and bts ranking among 50 plus old people in polls is fan driven too
Fd streaming narrative is going old now to discredit their song's success. From olympic athletes to actors who play BTS songs are their fans. Welcome. Gp are BTS fans in 2021.
But carry on believing what u want to! First chart reform was going to end them and now after chart reform, narrative remains same. Lol
I find it hilarious how often the fandom narrative comes up, I wish people were more creative about their discrediting

Not only are BTS carrying global music labels, they are even carrying McDonald's

I can't believe dead leaves is losing, it's literally one of their best songs
