hopefully it is clear I made this with BABYMONSTER in mind lol, don't take the title too seriously. Mostly to show they are putting up numbers on spotify that are at least competitive with other top groups. And their disco being in 2024 I don't think matters because groups like aespa/kiof/illit/lsf had at least 2 comebacks this year.
It absolutely matters. I think because in Kpop there is this culture of breaking records for new releases we forget, but people only streaming the latest release isn't really natural nor is it desireable behavior. Ideally what would happen is that someone checks out a new release, likes it, then decides to check out their other music and become a casual listener, then fan, and eventually hopefully one that spends money on albums/concerts. If there is an artist I like and 20% of their music is in 2024, then on average (obviously it doesn't always work this way, but theoretically) only 20% of my streams would apply to this metric. Again, this is how the average person listens to music, not stans. The record-breaking is fun and of course not irrelevent, but again, it's more about how you convert those streaming numbers in to longterm listeners/consumers.
Anyway, this is more of a general discussion rather than specifically about Babymonster as you intended. So congrats to Babymonster. -
Obviously, most of the metrics kpop stans use are arbitrary, but some are more meaningful than others. For example it's not exactly interesting or meaningful that aespa, a group that has existed since 2020, has more followers than babymonster, a rookie group.
Monthly listeners is probably actually decent if you look at the chart you posted, it's more or less in line with what I posted if looking at the 5th gen groups, though it does not show such a large gap between BM and KIOF, and obviously Illit benefits a lot off magnetic. But for older groups it's unfair because obviously they are benefitting from their established fanbase.
So that's why I went with 2024 total streams, it's still prone to issues like Magnetic but is more indicative of a groups success now, not in the past. If you disagree I'm happy to hear an argument against that.
Again, "success" is vague, and obviously Babymonster is successful, but I'm pretty sure we just disagree on what's important. I agree in that Babymonster shouldn't really be compared to well established groups, which is why I was confused on the title. I'm seeing now that there seems to be a lot of discussion on Babymonster vs. Kiss of Life vs. Illit, and that's appropriate I think. But to me, this stat alone isn't convincing me that they are somehow "crushing" clearly much more established groups like Le Sserafim, aespa, or NewJeans.
All of Babymonster's releases were in 2024 except for 1 single, so the only comparable artist in that case is Illit. Kiss of Life could arguably be in there but they also had 2 full EPs released in 2023. If your whole discography is in 2024 then this metric will obviously favor those groups. -
Yeah I'm getting that now, especially based on the aggressive response I got that there's a lot defensiveness happening. Seems to be a pattern for me. haha
I'll just speak to where I'm coming from. Perhaps it's just because I'm also an artist, stream numbers alone are only important insofar as they create exposure and followers leading to an actual fanbase of people spending real money. Which is why music analysts tend to look at ratios rather than raw numbers. -
but it's obvious they are taking about 2024 releases though nothing wrong with this thread. I think is pretty fair
There's nothing wrong with analyzing data, but when you make a statement like "crushes top groups", you can't only come with one metric. It's quite silly to extrapolate any meaningful conclusion like that based on one data point.

I'm not sure how you determined it's a "meaningless metric". All metrics are meaningless in a vacuum, as is the one you determined was the only important one. But I'm getting a lot of defensiveness, so clearly there's not really going to be a meaningful discussion here, so good luck with your thread.

So when you say "crushes top groups", does monthly listeners or followers mean nothing because there's a massive gap there? I'm just wondering why this is the only metric you're looking at considering such a bold statement.

It definitely will. It was just for an hour.

Oh wow. I didn't even realize Power was out of #2.

I was actually disappointed they never came out with anything like O.O again.

Never too late. Is it likely? Probably not.

Check the date. It's from 2023

Why did he have to make it so sensual?

Nope! And technically it's not even real until she does it LIVE, because you can hear the pitch correction, that's why it's not as irritating. I'm already afraid of her vocal cords if she does it live.
This is the longest and best belting in 2024! This was an Encore performance! Obviously, it's not fair to compare, but this is how real belting should sound. IF YG will give hear vocal training ASAP, Ahyeon can do this or something similar without losing her career!

She should not be screaming like that at all. If you hear the behind the scenes, that note is nowhere near a healthy production. She's very talented, but if they don't reign it in she's not going to make it past 25, if she's lucky, which would be a real shame.

From what I read, it may be a copyright issue. Me too. I can only find brief clips of it. -
