Pretty incredible since Bing has been dead for decades.
AI is getting out of control.

I'll say the same thing that I do every time this topic comes up, whether its about BP or BTS or whoever.
The short answer is that, you could simultaneously say that everything or nothing that happens in the world is mostly luck and timing. It just depends on your stance on determinism, and what angle you want to approach it from. Everyone has their view and probably isn't going to change their mind anytime soon.
But even if you agree everything is mostly luck (and aren't just saying that specifically about Blackpink to downplay their achievements) since it applies to everyone, it's not really worth focusing on. What I will say though is that attributing all of the success to the members themselves, saying they would have reached this level of success no matter what is also both delusional and simply unfair to the massive amount of effort and passion put into the brand by the creative/marketing teams, and all of the other supporting employees and staff. I'm sure the members themselves would be the first to agree. Blackpink's success is a massive collective effort.I typed a longer answer based on my own experience in the entertainment industry but decided not to post it because nobody will read it anyway. The gist of it was that although I have not achieved anywhere near the level of success as Blackpink, it still basically feels like every bit of success I get is just luck.

Seungri still has fans, so this is not surpising to me in the slightest.

Virtually irrelevant. It can be a nice bonus though.

aespa, NCT Dream, WayV, Red Velvet, Riize (I might have missed some) all touring, not to mention album sales
*edit* I did miss some. Super Junior, Key, Suho, and Doyoung also touring. -
What is chk chk boom? I've never heard of it, is it a Babymonster song?

Nobody really knows how much you get from streaming since there are a lot of factors, but it's absolutely not enough to live off of, even for somone as established as her. Granted, she does write most of her songs, which helps, but even then, she's never the only songwriter. A very generous figure that is sometimes cited is 2-3 million usd per billion streams, and if 80% of that goes to the record label--though maybe her split might be higher--splitting between the sometimes 5+ songwriters she's looking at like 200k usd if she's lucky, which is below poverty level over 10+ years. So definitely not surprising that she will make more from selling feet pictures.

Wow. The man who ended racism in 2020.

Damn it's barely November.
I haven't heard All I Want For Christmas around here in the US yet, but I know it's only a matter of time.
Hopefully they won't become like her in that they protect their voices. I saw her 2 years ago, and it wasn't pretty. The little she actually sang, anyway. -

hopefully it is clear I made this with BABYMONSTER in mind lol, don't take the title too seriously. Mostly to show they are putting up numbers on spotify that are at least competitive with other top groups. And their disco being in 2024 I don't think matters because groups like aespa/kiof/illit/lsf had at least 2 comebacks this year.
It absolutely matters. I think because in Kpop there is this culture of breaking records for new releases we forget, but people only streaming the latest release isn't really natural nor is it desireable behavior. Ideally what would happen is that someone checks out a new release, likes it, then decides to check out their other music and become a casual listener, then fan, and eventually hopefully one that spends money on albums/concerts. If there is an artist I like and 20% of their music is in 2024, then on average (obviously it doesn't always work this way, but theoretically) only 20% of my streams would apply to this metric. Again, this is how the average person listens to music, not stans. The record-breaking is fun and of course not irrelevent, but again, it's more about how you convert those streaming numbers in to longterm listeners/consumers.
Anyway, this is more of a general discussion rather than specifically about Babymonster as you intended. So congrats to Babymonster. -
Obviously, most of the metrics kpop stans use are arbitrary, but some are more meaningful than others. For example it's not exactly interesting or meaningful that aespa, a group that has existed since 2020, has more followers than babymonster, a rookie group.
Monthly listeners is probably actually decent if you look at the chart you posted, it's more or less in line with what I posted if looking at the 5th gen groups, though it does not show such a large gap between BM and KIOF, and obviously Illit benefits a lot off magnetic. But for older groups it's unfair because obviously they are benefitting from their established fanbase.
So that's why I went with 2024 total streams, it's still prone to issues like Magnetic but is more indicative of a groups success now, not in the past. If you disagree I'm happy to hear an argument against that.
Again, "success" is vague, and obviously Babymonster is successful, but I'm pretty sure we just disagree on what's important. I agree in that Babymonster shouldn't really be compared to well established groups, which is why I was confused on the title. I'm seeing now that there seems to be a lot of discussion on Babymonster vs. Kiss of Life vs. Illit, and that's appropriate I think. But to me, this stat alone isn't convincing me that they are somehow "crushing" clearly much more established groups like Le Sserafim, aespa, or NewJeans.
All of Babymonster's releases were in 2024 except for 1 single, so the only comparable artist in that case is Illit. Kiss of Life could arguably be in there but they also had 2 full EPs released in 2023. If your whole discography is in 2024 then this metric will obviously favor those groups. -
Yeah I'm getting that now, especially based on the aggressive response I got that there's a lot defensiveness happening. Seems to be a pattern for me. haha
I'll just speak to where I'm coming from. Perhaps it's just because I'm also an artist, stream numbers alone are only important insofar as they create exposure and followers leading to an actual fanbase of people spending real money. Which is why music analysts tend to look at ratios rather than raw numbers. -
but it's obvious they are taking about 2024 releases though nothing wrong with this thread. I think is pretty fair
There's nothing wrong with analyzing data, but when you make a statement like "crushes top groups", you can't only come with one metric. It's quite silly to extrapolate any meaningful conclusion like that based on one data point.

I'm not sure how you determined it's a "meaningless metric". All metrics are meaningless in a vacuum, as is the one you determined was the only important one. But I'm getting a lot of defensiveness, so clearly there's not really going to be a meaningful discussion here, so good luck with your thread.
