Is England a country, or a state of the UK?

  • The question may sound dumb but seriously many people where I am at don't have a solid picture about it.

Over here I used to call someone from Scotland English instead of Scottish, did not get a smile in return, called that Scottish person English the 2nd time I almost got F words.

Most people here thought English means people from the entire....island, even though I learned later Brits is the right word.

Still not sure, are Scottish and English like people from NY and LA, or London and Berlin?

Changed the title of the thread from “Is England a country, or a state of UK?” to “Is England a country, or a state of the UK?”.
  • it's a country

you should think of UK more like about European Union, just with less countries which bonds are stronger

  • So California wanted to be independent is BS for the fact that is it a state of the US and US is a collective term of 50 plus countries?

Yes and no. America is essentially just a bunch of smaller countries joined together to form a union, thus the whole "United States" thing. That is why we have two forms of government: the State and the Federal, and why laws and culture can vary so much from state to state.

California (or any State in the Union) could theoretically leave (secede from the union) to become its own State independent of the Federal U.S government, but it just wouldn't really work out for multiple reasons, one huge one being how easy it would be for the U.S to simply invade and take them back by force. And they most definitely would. California's economy is one of the largest in the U.S and so there is no way they would just let them go like that.

Actually not true since the supreme court ruled that states can not leave the united states. For any state to legally leave the union, the federal government would need to change their laws

Which is why I said "theoretically".

Literally, the whole point of the American Civil War was about the Confederate States in the South fighting to secede the Union. In recent years California, as well as Texas, having been talking about seceding from the union. Obviously, it's not going to happen, and like I said, for "multiple" reasons. I just happened to state one of the main ones being that they would definitely lose should they try to go by force.
