Just say "I don't know what Coachella is or how it works" and be done with it.

Well according to some Blinks (based on how they kept using that one performance to brag), Coachella is the pinnacle of success, so I’m not really surprised

Like seriously, have people even looked at the artists at Coachella? Most of the people there don’t have any of these things.
Do you know who Mika is? Anitta? Grupo Firme? Ari Lennox? Princess Nokia? Juicewon? Flume? Masego? Coffee? Record Safari? Run The Jewels? Maggie Rogers? Gabe Real? These are all artists that appeared on the main stage and don’t meet the criteria you’ve set here.
(They have fandoms of course but not “huge western fandoms”. I wish Ari Lennox, Masego and Run the Jewels were bigger cuz they’re great..)

Thanks. This is the first time I've taken a close look at the Coachella line-up, and I have to say that I haven't even heard of 90%+ of the artists listed. Having never really looked into the concert before, it was my belief that you had to be relatively mainstream to perform there, but I guess not.

Coachella has always been a festival to highlight more indie\alt or smaller artists. Only in recent years has it slowly gone more mainstream but at it's roots that's what it is

I see. I just looked up Coachella on Wikipedia to get a bit more background information as well.
So we on AKP often use the term "nugu" to describe lesser-known artists. Would it be fair to say that most of the acts performing at Coachella could be described as such?
As someone who doesn't really follow "Western" music, I guess I'm just trying to get a sense of how popular these acts are.

late reply but not really, many of the acts that perform there have decent followings & streams, i wouldn't say they're like completely irrelevant

Yeah I think that's fair. So since I was curious, I actually took a handful of the artists in the line-up and checked the number of Instagram followers they have. Most only have a few hundred thousand, which is on the level of a "nugu" group such as Rocket Punch.
Thus, it appears that Aespa, with over 8 million followers, would actually be one of the most popular acts in the line-up (with the understanding that IG followers are an inexact measure of popularity). They likely out-sell the vast majority of the other acts, too.
So the latest line-up from Coachella's official web site is shown below. Do we know why Aespa isn't listed?
