Most successful 3rd gen visual?

  • Irene

    Jisoo

    Tzuyu

My ranking would be, going purely based on speculation about how much money they are earning right now from their solo activities:

    1. Jisoo

Dior's main girl. She has appeared in every major magazine (Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar) in Asia at some point in 2022 and her face is currently all over Korea as part of the Dior Addict campaign. Her drama was not well received domestically but considering it did fine on Disney+, the fact that she still has Korean endorsements, and the media turn out when she pulled up at that Dior event in Seoul she is far from blacklisted in SK. Her solo is also guaranteed to sell at least 500-600k

    2. Irene

Probably makes next to nothing from solo activities currently, but was a former it girl so that counts for something. Her acting debut and station songs made zero noise. Personally I don't see her making a comeback as an it girl or ever getting a solo but she was huge in her prime

    3. Tzuyu

She could have been an it girl but was held back by her company. If she ever leaves JYP, I think she can make it big in Taiwan as an actress/model.

    Approved the thread.
  • Tzuyu is such wasted potential. Could have been the first foreign it girl but jyp just had to stop all of her momentum

  • Tzuyu is such wasted potential. Could have been the first foreign it girl but jyp just had to stop all of her momentum

Probably due to her scandal with the flag or something and JPYe got scared to push her. Who knows. Also, those 3 are the most plain af visuals ever. They got no personality, they're like dry walls

Does AoA Seolhyun count as 'visual' enough by obsessives stans standard? She's seems to be doing pretty well

  • irene at her peak was definitely the biggest out of the 3, she was literally an IT girl but yeah since 2020, Jisoo is leading the race. Tzuyu well maybe if she goes solo in Taiwan when Twice isn't a group anymore someday.

  • Tzuyu stans overuse her scandal. She stagnated because she has little personality. You can bring up receipts of her having fun, with the amount of time Twice have spent in front of a camera there would be something very wrong if she'd never cracked a smile. But she has nothing to say for herself. In her thing with Nayeon Once's were praising their chemistry but it looked like she was having a job interview with someone she just met! It girls need to have charm as well as looks.

  • Tzuyu was never an It girl, some others in TWICE are even likelier to be regarded as It girl than her.

Tzuyu was a top visual who might have had the potential to be an It girl, if JYP had handled things better.

But it should be clear by now that it was sheer luck that Suzy under JYP became such a top tier successful visual, and that JYP and his people don't know how to handle their idols' individual careers and potential.

So no, when it comes to successful 3rd gen It girls, then it's Irene who had the most CF endorsements of them all and who in her peak years was the unquestionable queen bee of It girls and nonstop, consistent popularity. Jennie who is without a doubt the most popular and most It girl member of BP in South Korea, and is still a top idol in popularity and brand power. And Jisoo who, as a member of BP, is a very successful visual with strong popularity too (but not as strong as Jennie in South Korea and Jennie and Lisa internationally).

  • lol i dont even find irene pretty but she's 100x bigger than Jisoo.

may be in your delusion mind and unlike jisoo, Irene attitude controversy preety much damage her reputation and rt now jisoo is far more popular and successful than her and when jisoo will release her solo, her album sales, streams, views will be far better than RV itself.

  • in korea in her prime Irene was bigger than Jisoo. But lately after her scandal idk how she stands

Tzuyu was also super big but that was shortlived compared to the other 2

    So currently Jisoo>Irene>>Tzuyu

Before and for the longest time Irene>>>>Jisoo>Tzuyu

  • Tzuyu stans overuse her scandal. She stagnated because she has little personality. because irene has such a vibrant and charming personality? lol

  • In korea alone irene at her peak ofc, she also had 10 times more push from her company. Overall jisoo wins by a long shot and it's probably been the case since 2017 or 2018

  • Does AoA Seolhyun count as 'visual' enough by obsessives stans standard? She's seems to be doing pretty well

Seolhyun is the quintessential "de facto" visual. In other words the member who is not designated as the official visual, but in reality serves as the visual despite that fact. She's basically the template for this type of visual.

Seolhyun nearly singly handedly lifted AOA from the minor leagues to become a top level group on the back of her individual ascension to "It Girl" status during her peak circa 2014-2017, a time I refer to as kpop's "Seolhyun Mania" period. Though she is still very popular and a top Korean entertainment figure, her focus is largely in Korean drama now so theirs less direct exposure in Kpop proper. But in the past she was huge specifically in kpop. And everywhere. On everyone's mind. In numerous high profile CFs, the focus and talk of TV shows and variety, with numerous event and awards hosting gigs. Much like a Jennie during her peak.

And, to get back to he point I was intending to make, her meteoric run as "Kpop It Girl" explicitly centered around her beauty , (Ex. If you recall one such facet was her being known for a "figure" pose that was even made into life-size cardboard stands that had such popularity they were the subject of public thefts.). Her "visual" was the prominent focal point of AOA marketing, promotional features, and how the company oversaw the group (she was generating the bulk of the money for AOA in their early period via her engagements and activities.)

So in conclusion, yes... Seolhyun is most certainly one of the top Visuals of 3rd generation, with enormous success.

She is right up their with the likes of Irene, Tzuyu, Jennie, etc.

Newer kpop fans often don't have a sense of how big she was and may discount this, as she cooled off in kpop post 2018 and especially now that AOA is effectively defunct. She's not as trendy to discuss now as her peak was early, in the transitional period straddling 2nd and 3rd gen, so many of the middle to late period 3rd generation stans never properly witnessed her peak period. Because of this she's often left out of in the list of main 3rd generation visuals in many fans assessments.

Note:. Probably much more than you wanted for an answer but I was feeling fanboyish today

You both have got a point, but wasn't AOA more of a late 2nd gen girl group, just like Girl's Day and Sistar? Which would make Seolhyun more of a 2nd gen visual.

  • Agreed.

    Despite my answer...

I actually think of her as a late 2nd generation visual myself. It depends on how you see the generational split.

In my view AOA straddled the line between generations, debuting at the end of 2nd and carrying over much of a 2nd generation sensibility (e.g. tapping the 2nd gen sexy wave.), and experiencing a bulk of their prominence prior to the entrance of the primary girl groups that are generally considered the defining top players of 3rd generation (TWICE, BLACKPINK, RED VELVET).

So in that sense, I see AOA as more 2nd Gen group. This is how I categorize them personally.

But my answer was assuming they are considered a (early) 3rd gen group or grandfathered in as a Transitional generation group. This aligns with Wikipedia view and I assume the view of the user I was responding to.

It's one of those things that depends on who's generational timeline you go with. I've seen AOA placed both in 2nd gen and 3rd (as an early player). So I was allowing for that disparity in my answer.
