How many members do you think your fave could lose and still sound like your fave?

  • well... shinee's sound did change after Jonghyun passed... and yeah I do miss what Jonghyun brought to their music. There really wasn't a voice like his.

But also, I feel like shinee did try different kinds of sounds throughout their career and still do. They are always evolving in my eyes but even so, I still identify it all as "shinee" I think.

Jonghyun was an enormous loss. I'm glad you feel that they still sound like themselves.

I would say Winner's sound changed when they lost Taehyun. Maybe the push and pull as songwriters between him, Yoon, and Mino caused a different sound than Yoon and Mino.

  • Ah, true. Some groups have a member line that forms kinda a "backbone" of their sound. With MX, I would argue that their backbone is Joohoney, Kihyun, and I.M. MX would not sound like MX without them. That's not to say the other members aren't talented or that they don't contribute, but those three are a huge part of their sound, especially since JH and IM compose so much now. And it would be difficult to replace them cuz they sound so distinctive

I don't follow Monsta X closely but I would agree. Kihyun's vocal is quite specific. Similarly with Joohoney and I.M. and their raps. I'm not sure I could pick out the other two members' sounds. I thought the same around specific members of 127 and EXO but didn't want to seem like I was throwing shade (every member has a role and they all contribute but the group's sound would be very very different) so I used the WayV example, which is much more clear cut in making that point IMO..

Lol, yeah, it's hard to talk about someone else's fave. I usually default to talking about MX cuz I'm basically alone in my monbebe-ness here

    :pepe-sad:

  • I don't think it's so much about the sound as it is about the dynamic. A missing member (whether it be because they left, their on hiatus, or even just a unit song) can lead to using the members in a new way which alters the dynamic.

Like NCT Dream performing as 5 members doesn't change the sound, but the dynamic because you're losing the qualities that Mark and Haechan contribute to the group.

Jonghyun raised TaeKey musically and all of SHINee grow up together and are big influence on each other

Thats why his presence is felt even if he is no longer with us
