The series take place thousands years before the events of the trilogy, back when Sauron was roaming and befriending the people of Middle-Earth. It's the time he started forging the Rings of Power (hence the series title) and gifting them to the great lords of Elves, Dwarfs and Men.

So it won't replace the films, at best it will compliment it.

honestly only tolkien's work is canon this is his world so anything he didnt write is just expensive fanfic, not looking forward to this at all

and as many others pointed the movie is already too good

this is one of the reasons why I think a hp series would ever be good, the movies are already iconic

This is based on his work though (The Silmarillion). Even though they gonna expand beyond what Tolkien wrote I think. But the LOTR movies took some liberties too so at the end of the day, it can be good as long as it's written and shot competently.
