I originally thought it was a certain type of award, but then I saw that a bunch of people got it for the same show. So, then I just assumed daesang was a word that meant "award" no matter the category and went with that for a few years. But now I see people talking about bongsang and am confused again. Sigh.
After three years as a kpop fan, I still have no idea what a daesang is

Daesang means Grand Prize. They are the biggest awards of the night. Typically split into Artist/Album/Song of the Year. But that varies depending on the award show.
Bonsangs are other awards. Not the Grand Prize, but a step below that.

Typically Music Proividers like MNet, Melon and others will have a Song of the Year Daesang, an Album of the Year Daesang and an Artist of the Year. Music Provider Awards I tend to favor more as it based off their own Sales Data.
In the past, Daesang were just given to Artist of the Year, this still occurs with Korean Music Awards.

Since the debut of WannaOne, there has been a creation of Popularity Daesangs such as World Artists, personally I think they are rubbish

once you figured out what a daesang actually is you still have to determine whether the organisation that gave the daesang actually means anything lol
lol alot of daesangs don’t even really mean anything except for literal grandprize… like at the SMA’s they have a regular award for both song of the year and album of the year, then have a completely separate Daesang that has no clear meaning except for it being “grandprize”.
